Gene Patton, the NBC stagehand in Burbank who stole the spotlight as Gene Gene the Dancing Machine on NBC’s wacky The Gong Show, died Monday, his family announced. He was 82.

Patton died in Pasadena, according to a spokeswoman at the local Woods-Valentine Mortuary. He had suffered from diabetes.

The Gong Show, dreamed up and hosted by producer Chuck Barris (The Dating Game, The Newlywed Game), aired on NBC in daytime from 1976-78 and then in syndication. Acts — most of them amateurish and just plain awful — auditioned for three celebrity judges, who banged a gong on stage to mercifully send the bad ones packing.

Nobody could slut up a game show like Jaye P. Morgan.

The Gong Show was on when I was a young kid. Used to love the Gene Gene the Dancing Machine segments.

Chuck Barris looks so high in those clips.

Dude could put out some good game shows though. Newlywed Game with Bob Ewbanks was money back in the day. And Dating Game was pretty great too.

What a wacky show - RIP Gene.

By the way, my favorite clip from the Gong Show . . .

Loved that show, my fav was the unknown comic, my sister had a poster of him in the nude except for the bag on his head and a small paper bag on his junk.

Judging by Klinger carrying her back to her seat, I think Jaye P. Morgan must have tried to join them to avoid being upstaged. (She was a shameless whore.)

And RIP Gene. I danced along with him more than once. It was up there with the Monday Morning March.
