Marcus Mariota's pro day gets underwhelming review

For Marcus Mariota's sake, hopefully he fared better in his private workout with the Tennessee Titans than he did at his pro day.
"I thought it went OK,” Mariota told NFL Network after his workout Thursday. “There were some misthrows here and there."
ESPN.com’s New York Jets reporter Rich Cimini watched it on TV and wrote that he agreed with some in attendance that it was “underwhelming.” This is what he wrote.
“Mariota's ball placement was off on some short and intermediate throws. He underthrew a couple of long balls. He overthrew a couple of long balls. He put too much air under a couple. He was much better on seam routes, post routes and any type of crossing routes, where he showed nice timing and anticipation.”
Lindsay Rhodes of NFL Network said it was a 65-throw script devised with Kevin O'Connell, who trained Mariota for the combine before joining the Cleveland Browns' staff.
Charlie Casserly of NFL Network said he wouldn’t grade the workout based on having watched it on TV.
“I like a lot of things I see about the guy,” he said. “He’s not a sure thing. So you're going to take him, there is a little bit of hold your breath here

Marcus Mariota would only be successful under Kelly in my opinion. Possibly in a situation similar to Wilson in Seattle, but that situation does not exist.

He's lowering his draft stock so he can go to PHI instead of TEN...

Tennessee doesn't need him. They need defensive pieces

Well, Manziel's was nearly perfect last year and we see how that worked out.

I agree. He's really not that great of a pro prospect.
Titans aren't wasting their pick on him.

well he's an underwhelming top of the draft QB

He may be good or he may be bad but his pro day has nothing to do with it

The same thing was said about Teddy Bridgewater last year. And he had a great rookie year.

Agreed. Manziel had a great pro day. Bridgewater did not. I know which of those two I would rather build the future around.
That said, Mariota will suck in the NFL.

So was JaMarcus Russel's pro day.
Are scouts and GMs seriously putting more stock in a single day's workout than hours of game film? The guy has been a starter for three years and has 40+ games under his belt. Does that not say enough about his abilities?

How can you frick up a pro day

That game film doesn't have him taking one snap from under center. So what good is it?
He's not a first round QB. He has a shot to be a solid pro simply because he has the work ethic to pull it off. But you can't learn to play from under center in a few months and expect to be as good at it as others that have been doing it for years.
That's not even considering his arm strength which is suspect as well. People are scared to admit he's a project because they like him so much.

Throwing mechanics (e.g. delivery, velocity, accuracy, strength) are the same regardless of the offensive formation. As long as Oregon has some element of a vertical passing game then there is not too much to doubt in this respect.
If they want to evaluate his ability to perform a three, five, and seven-step drop from under center then that's fine. But don't place too much stock in his passing ability being a little off during this sort of workout.
Some players appear All-World within the sheltered confines of a practice field, but then crumble under the pressure when the lights go on, and vice versa.
For the record, I'm not saying he is a sure thing. Honestly, I think this will go down as one of the most underwhelming quarterback draft classes in the past ten years.

I don't think he fricked up his Pro Day at all. Why does everything have to be hall of fame worthy or dumpster fire?

Well Pro Days are supposed to make the QB look like the next coming of Peyton Manning. QBs throwing to his own WRs, the throws are supposed to be tailored to what he does best. Near flawless performances are the standard.

Chip Kelly told Marcus to look bad on purpose so he falls. If Mariotta somehow becomes an Eagle, you wont convince me otherwise
