Pretty good read from Louis Bien on the trade. I'll miss Graham, but this trade could actually make the team better in the short and long term.

The decision to trade Jimmy Graham just one season after signing him to an extension seems like the sort of over-correction that good franchises make when things go bad. The Saints went 7-9 last season in an awful division one season after going 11-5. In response, they appear to have tossed away one of their most gifted offensive weapons for a center and a late first-round pick.

But let's give the Saints the benefit of the doubt. They have earned that much by being one of the NFL's best team of the last 10 years. On the surface, the team is trying to put itself in a neater position next to the salary cap for the next several years. The deal is heavy with subtext, however, and it may be the biggest sign that the franchise is in the midst of a longterm transition.

Namely, the Saints are trying to figure out what they are going to do without Drew Brees.

quote:

The trade for Unger and the deal for Ingram suggest that the Saints are readying to scale back their passing attack. Though known as a pass-heavy offense, the Saints have ranked among the best rushing offenses in the NFL in the recent past. In 2009 and 2011, the team finished sixth in the NFL in total rushing offense with more than 2,100 yards on the ground. Those two seasons were also the only two 13-win seasons in franchise history, with 2009 ending in a Super Bowl victory.

quote:

The team's problem with Brees is not that he struggles, it's that he can't struggle, not if the team is to have any success. At 35 years old, Brees accounted for more than 75 percent of the team's total offense. He has accounted for at least 73 percent of the Saints offense in every season since 2007, except for 2009, when the Saints running game was one of the league's best. The Saints' trade Tuesday may be their way off taking pressure off their quarterback.

There are several articles coming out now that seem to favor both teams and agree it was a good deal for both teams.

Now that everybody is calmed down and omfgz the saints lost Jimmy!! People aren't around, they realize it was a good deal

And the problem with this is not understanding the numbers

I'd be more interested in seeing what the numbers looked like for the first half of ballgames in 2009

You run more when you have a comfortable lead to eat clock

A lot of the first grades were just people saying the Seahawks got Grahm. If you knew nothing about our situation and what were doing then Seahawks look like the winner of the trade. But if you really look at what happen, both teams are easily winners giving the nod to the Saints.

We were top 10 in the league in rushing in 09.

That doesn't come from just running it when you have a lead late in the 4th

No one can possibly know if this is a good deal yet. Like 99% of trades, you'll have to wait and see.

I think if anything the trade right now as it stands is a push. There is no way to adequately grade it other than face value and paper championships don't mean squat.

Agree that time will tell, but heres the most simple explanation of the trade...

Can the Saints win a championship without exceptional O-Line play, particularly interior O-Line play? Answer is almost a definite no.

Can the Saints win a championship without Jimmy Graham? History would indicate the answer is yes.

and in 2011, Jimmy Graham had one of the best seasons of any TE in NFL history. Does no one remember this?

and as it stands, our team is NOT built like the 2009 time. You don't just repeat this stuff, you need players to do it.

Big offensive weapon signings are exciting and make for good copy. Even people who don't know much about football know who Jimmy Graham is. So then in the cold light of day the people who know what they're talking about start to analyze the really unsexy part of the trade... NOLA gets a center... yawn... but oh wait, this guy is really good, and Drew was running for his life all last season...

Wait a minute, there might be something great here for the Saints....

there is no escaping the black eye that is signing graham a year ago and then trading him this year

there is no escaping the terrible drafting our front office has done

there is no escaping the complete mismanagement of the offensive line (esp C)

the legit people who have issues with this deal have issues with the totality of the situation, combined with a front office past littered with failure. yeah we can't judge this individual trade right now, b/c we won't even feel the cap relief until brees is almost 37

we all knew when brees signed his big deal that we did not have much of a window left. our front office has completely fricked up since then
