Apple will be an exclusive partner for HBO Now at launch, HBO's CEO confirmed at the event. All its catalogue to TV shows, movies, and original programming — past, present, and future — will be available.
All you'll need is a broadband connection or an Apple device.
HBO Now will go live in April, and if you sign up then, you'll get the first month free.
Apple also announced the Apple TV will be much cheaper: It will cost just $69, even though it's traditionally cost $99.

It's not clear how long the exclusivity window will be, but since they are saying "exclusive at launch" I would hope it'd be on most devices by the end of the year.

Well I just got HBOGo (finally it just was released) on my PS4 and I use my brother's account.
I was willing to shell out for HBO Now just to support some of my favorite all-time series.
But after 7 years of being an iOS guy I just made the move to android for my phone OS. I still have an appleTV in my den but I won't use it for HBO Now. I still own a macbook air and iPad but this shite is ridiculous. Way to alienate fans HBO, I guess I'll continue to watch HBOGo and not pay for it instead.

Yup. I just got rid of my cable box and was all fired up to buy HBO only but I'm not part of the Apple cult. Guess I will continue with Ice for HBO.

I mean its $100 for apple tv, and its a cool little device that is only enhanced by having other apple products, but not necessary. I'm an Android user and have been hoping to drop cable if not for hbo, so this is great news

Apple TV is only 69 as of today
But then he'd have to join that nasty "cult"

Needs to come to fire asap

Don't get me wrong. I own 3 appleTVs total and bought my mother one as well. That was the device that got me to cut the cord 3 years ago now (damn has it been that long?). I just don't like a great service like HBO doing some stupid shite like saying "you don't need a cable provider" now but limiting the new service to Apple.
"You no longer have to have a cable provider, but you have to own the AppleTV, so the millions of you with FireTV, Roku, Nexus, game consoles, YOU guys still have to have that cable provider"
Just nonsense.

don't see this exclusivity thing lasting long

It's called capitalism you commie frick. HBO can make deals with whoever they want and provide services to whoever they want. This is a huge slap to the utilities providers lobby and over regulation and hopefully more follow suit.
Remember when att was the only place you could get an iPhone? These exclusivity deals typically last a few years before it becomes an open market.
This is a net positive to the consumer

Well HBO can go frick itself then.

So I'm a commie frick because I called out HBO for saying they finally have the new online service for not requiring a cable provider but they can force you to buy a product to use it that you don't need because you have other streaming devices?
And I'm the commie bastard? They did a bait & switch. They were drumming up the no-strings-attached version of HBOGo but married it to Apple (for the time being)
Why should someone that owns FireTV or Roku and already can use HBOGo have to go out and buy a second device that does everything theirs already does just to get HBO without a cable provider?

did he say he thought the government should stop them? the frick is this nonsense
just said he wished they would roll it out to all the platforms
I have a roku and currently "borrow" HBOGo and I would actually like to pay for HBONow, but I won't go out and buy an AppleTV for it. I'll continue to "borrow" HBOGo services until it becomes available on Roku

Going direct to consumer and pissing off your cable partners is a big move for HBO. You definitely don't want it to flop out of the gate, so soft launching to one of the more desirable customer bases makes sense.

Thank you.
i was wondering where the left turn into government ethos came about.

ON the flip side, partnering with apple and pissing everyone who doesn't have apple off is a fricked up way to go about this.
I can guarantee you i will never pay HBO because of this.

I do see the merit in this strategy. All we need now is a big time network/cable channel that's not premium to follow suit (ESPN, FOX, AMC) and the old cable company package model will die a painful and quick death. This is good news for the big picture. Hats off to HBO, bc this will cause flack. The ps4 HBOGo app just came out, yet comcast will not allow it.
