What the hell has happened to the Texas Rangers?

Just a few years ago, they were atop the AL. Seems like it all started slowly falling apart when CJ Wilson went to Anaheim.

Really? CJ Wilson? They have had some injuries.

There is a lot of parity in baseball

I'm not sure but as a fan it sucks.
Injury bug got us for sure
CJ Sucked and still does
We started falling apart when we needed one strike twice to win the World Series and blew it.

injuries and bad FA deals

They were best when there was conflict at the top between Jon Daniels and Nolan Ryan, but Nolan bolted for Houston where his son is exploring a front-office career.

The windown doesn't stay open forever

stahp it hurts my head just to think about it.
One Strike Away. Twice. I'm pretty sure a Rangers beat writer has a blog called One strike away
anyway, the core players from those pennant teams are gone. this is the first time in 2 years I feel like the rotation is going to get significantly better. Beltre will still over .300 but his power numbers are slightly starting to fade. Will Fielder hit his weight? Can Choo stay healthy? Does Odor hit a sophomore slump?
and Mitch Moreland still sucks

Ranger fans are jaded because of his lack of performance in the post season. Simple as that. he was a crafty pitcher for years. And give him credit for being one of the few guys to go from a a closer role into the rotation and be successful

I'm hoping Gallo lives up to the hype.

I need to get up to Frisco to watch him play
Posted on 3/8/15 at 4:41 pm to WinnPtiger
I know he has a 5.92 ERA overall but his last year with Texas he had a 2.92 ERA in the postseason.... not to mention his 3.00 ERA in the WS in 2010...
So in 2 WS experiences the dude has 4 games 3 starts 18.1 innings, 11 hits, 7 runs, 6 earned runs, 13 walks, 13 strikeouts

Jon Daniels wasn't as smart as he thought he was.

Ron Washington's gone.

Two things happened to the Rangers:
ONE. A near Biblical rash of injuries. Last season, only two starting position players did not spend time on the DL (Andrus and Martin). OK, Beltre was only there 15 days, but to sum up the Rangers season, Kouzmanoff played great in relief, and then had a season ending injury. Only one started reached 25 starts, and it was Colby Lewis who was horrible. Darvish was eventually shut down, and Holland was lost for the year.
In the end, the Rangers lost their starting 1B, 2B, RF, LF, C, closer, and 1st and 2nd starters for the year. Just a brutal rash of injuries.
TWO. Every single prospect has failed. OK, not every one, but close. Three years ago, the Rangers had arguably the #1 farm system in baseball, but definitely top 5. How have those prospects fared? Profar: failure due to injury. Olt? Traded and a failure in Chicago. Perez? Made 8 starts, so he's at least a major leaguer. Odor? Barely replacement level, but just being in the majors is an accomplishment. Buckel, Grimm, and Jackson? Varying degrees of failure, but they are pitchers and might still make it. Martin? Probably the most successful one, providing a league average bat. Oh, and they added Choice from Chicago, and he turned out the worst rookie season in 100 years. Literally.
The Rangers are in the painful process of turning over their older players and into younger prospects, and the prospects have all pretty much fallen on their faces. And now Yu Darvish is out for the year.
I'm not sure if the failure is with the minor league instruction or at the major league level. Wash didn't exactly like to play younger guys if he could help it. But the failure is certainly there. You need to turn those prospects into real, live players.

to be fair, Odor just made 21 last month, and Profar is still only 22.
Posted on 3/8/15 at 6:00 pm to Lester Earl
Profar missed all of last season and will miss all of this year. He won't play again until he's 23 after 2 years away from the game. And most of his value as a prospect was tied into being a shortstop, and he's moved to 2nd base. He might one day turn into a decent player, but he's done as a prospect. But I was never his big fan. I advocated two years ago trading him for a centerfielder or 1st baseman, two huge areas of need for the Rangers.
Odor is more interesting. Just being in the majors is a success at his age, even if he was terribly overmatched.

It is impossible to call Odor a failure. He was almost league average at 20 years old. That is awesome.
Profar can still be a good player, but his star is diminishing because he is losing another year of development.
