I consider myself a fairly intelligent sports fan ( football and basketball) but I as a 30 year old it's hard for me to put guys I watched when I was young or only have read/watched highlights into proper prospective. Can this board help me out?

You can immerse yourself in the stats of the day, but both games are capable of rapidly changing. Lesean McCoy being traded for an injured linebacker just wouldn't have happened in the 60s, 70s, 80s, or probably 90s.

Dude was a stud. Best LB for several years in his prime.

LT and DT were the 2 best edge rushers I ever saw. Ask Dave Krieg.

Thank you.

If you were to compare him to a player today who would it be? Not a direct comparison but a frame of reference

This is basically what I'm asking. I am trying to get a frame of reference

I know I'm extremely lucky to enjoy what Alabama has accomplished during the Saban era. But, and this is downright greedy, DAMN do I wish I wasn't born in 1990. Because I missed some absolutely amazing football. And DT is a huge reason why I feel this way.

Cornelius Bennett(LB, 2nd overall pick in 87), Thomas(OLB, 4th overall pick in 89), and Keith McCants(OLB, 4th overall pick in 90) were fricking MONSTERS. Christmas is my favorite time of year because I get to go "home"(Anniston, Alabama), and watch old video of Alabama teams and listen to my family bullshite about the times. Just like Alabama fans, huh? Living in the past

Don't have time to elaborate right now, I'll give you a better response tomorrow if you're still interested.

Agree.

Derrick Thomas was a freak athlete off the edge. He could play the mike/sam LB at an all-pro level as well though. Just a fricking freak.

His father was a B-52 pilot shot down over North Vietnam, and is still listed as Missing In Action.
