Scotty is so damned Scottish in the show that I need a name with Scottish in it.
The closest thing I could come up with for McCoy was a St Bernard because they walk around with booze in a barrel in shite saving retards from freezing half to death.

I did not see it suggested, and it's not uncommon for the obvious to be overlooked. I think it's a good choice. The typical specimen has jet black hair like Scotty, and they're very protective. I can see one going after a Klingon foolish enough to liken the Enterprise to a garbage scow.

He was the original choice, but he would be overshadowed by the size of the rest of the cast/dogs.
