I'm absolutely not saying don't let you kids spend the night away. My kid is 6 and has a couple of folks we let him go stay with....

I'm just saying lets not be naive about reality. And F-it. This is absolutely one of those situations that it is 100% better to be safe than sorry. This is the kind of stuff that if it happens, can ruin generations, and that is only slightly over-dramatized.

Not surprised your wife is a dolt.

Lee, did you go to sleepovers as a kid? if so, do you consider that your parents were irresponsible for allowing that?

Sadly, the world has changed in the last few decades, and it is no longer a safe place for children. Pedophiles and child molesters are more pervasive than ever.

so fricking stupid

perception is not reality

the world is so much safer now for a kid than it was when most of us were growing up (80s and 90s)

Shows how easily people can be manipulated by media, even unintentionally.

What you're saying is there are snakes outdoors, the chances of ever getting bitten was always very low and it's even lower today, but the fact that there is any chance of being bitten requires staying indoors and never going outside under any circumstances.

This:

...is utterly nonsensical and out of touch with reality.

It's absolutely safer today. The late 80's, early 90's were probably the most violent times in the US in the past 50 years.

You hear about incidents more because of awareness and media.

James Dobson.... We watched a video about gay marriage in Sunday school that was produced by this dude and it was essentially an hour-long justification of why christians should hate homosexuals....Completely counter-productive regardless of your stance on the matter. Basically, I don't subscribe to James Dobson.

ETA: We also aren't a part of that class or attend that church anymore...

You are for some reason trying to take this down a path that I did to intend by starting this thread.

I think there's an age appropriate level (which I've already stated ) that kids should be able to get out away from parents watch.

I was raised where we left sometime in the am and came back at dark in the summer.
We camped out and stayed at each other's houses,,, but i dont remember doing any if that until I was little older 12 or so...

I'm sure when mine get older I'll look at this differently

A thousand times THIS. People obsess over tiny risks while probably letting their kids just hope in a car with any old driver to go to karate practice or whatever. If your kids are going to die, it's going to be in a car.

well I completely agree that sleepovers should wait till the child is age appropriate, which is dependent on the child
