In terms of building extra fan base. Thats not really going to happen and City is a perfect example.

I went to a bar in Austin for the final day last season and there were at least 100 people wearing City shirts.

So you're not totally in favor of FFP either.

No sane person would argue against money to bring stability to a club, and FFP isn't against that. It wants to stop play toy clubs with reckless spending.

quote:

If the club has a contract, that's going to guarantee a revenue source for the club for the length of that deal and won't add debt on the club. I don't see what the issue is.

B.c the club isn't worth that much. So they use shady deals to try and loop hole the rules.

quote:

That's not really what I meant though. Chelsea, through their success, has expanded their fan base dramatically over the last 10 years, which equates to more shirt/merchandise sales and completely legitimate sponsorships that they would not have gotten if not for their spending in the first 6-8 years of the Abramovich era. That model is now illegal.

Chelsea have always had a strong base in the UK and Europe.

quote:

There are droves upon droves of American Chelsea fans, many of whom would have picked another club if not for their recent success.

Hell, after the news the other day there are a bunch of Chelsea fans who live in freaking Manchester apparently. Europe is not immune from bandwagoning.

Those american fans and the revenue is peanuts. They might buy a jersey once in a while but they for the most part are not traveling to matches in London.

Once again none of which are not filling up their stadium and bringing in match day revenue.

Those clubs regularly tour America and other countries and fill up stadiums.

And some do go to games. I've been to two Newcastle matches over there (not that Ashley would put that money back into the club)

And also TV is becoming more and more important. Chelsea's new shirt deal is the result of their large, worldwide fan base that watch the matches regularly.

well duh, pre season in the states is awesome

I know some do go but its a very small number.

The guy in the states who gets a jersey every year is nothing compared to the fan in england or from europe who goes multiple times a year and spends hundreds on match day.

Yep. In the 90's Chelsea drew half the crowd size they draw today.

Tires

Thats about tapping into new and existing markets.

No one is arguing City and Chelsea didn't get a bigger fan base outside of europe. Asians, Arabs and Africans love to bandwagon.

You can't say that between merchandise, pre-season tours, and sponsorships due to eyeballs watching on TV that it's an insignificant number.

Would you have agreed with this 8 years ago??

I kind of have mixed feelings about it... I should like it, but I'm not thoroughly convinced..

edit: all that said, it is in place and I'm not that bothered by it..

Hard to say if I would have agreed with it eight years ago. I think City then could have found success, obviously not as fast as they actually did. But it would have been a process that I think they could have figured out with multiple years of the rules in play.

One question I have is, for teams like Wolfsburg, which are owned by Volkswagon, or a corporation, how easy is it for them to funnel money into club and make it look like it came from revenues, compared to say an BPL side who has one majority individual owner? I'm assuming the auditors for FFP are pretty good, but could that happen?

Right, which coupled with a commitment to success drew increased crowds, which lead to more money.

On a worldwide scale yes

But there is a reason sky is paying 6 billion to just show the games in the UK. Overseas income is just icing on the cake.

A club like city just won't ever be that well supported. Bandwagons abroad come and go.

They renovated in the 90's bro

quote:

It is named after former Chelsea director Matthew Harding, whose investment helped transform the club in the early 1990s before his death in a helicopter accident on 22 October 1996. His investment in the club enabled construction of the stand which was completed in time for the 1996–97 season

quote:

The upper tier provides spectators with one of the best views of the pitch and it is the only section to have survived the extensive redevelopment of the 90s.

quote:

The new stand opened in time for the 1997/98 season. Along with the Matthew Harding Stand, it is an area of the ground where many vocal fans congregate today. The view from the upper tier is widely regarded as one of the best in the stadium

quote:

The lower tier was built on schedule and opened in 1998. However, difficulties with planning permission meant that the stand was not fully completed until 2001

all before the take over

I'd agree with that. Fans over there aren't like Yankees fans over here. I mean I picked them because their color blue was the same as the middle school I went to and I doubt many people base their decision on that lol.

City get shite from just about everyone over here about their fans or lack there off and thats why the sponsorship deals and stadium expansion are a farce.

They might grow a fan base around the world but that fan base isn't contributing the the major factor of match day revenue.

It would take a whole generation of kids in england liking city and city being really good winning something for somewhat of a base to develop. Problem is thats not happening people are to tribalistic over here. Greater Manchester alone is overwhelmingly red.

I definitely agree. I watch almost all of City's games and it's a totally different (quiet) atmosphere in the Etihad, unless someone scores or there's a bad foul, than it is it seems during any other match regarding other teams.

I'm assuming that's just the fan base just not being vocal? I like to think it's like Jerry World and the acoustics just suck, but that's being optimistic.

Its strange PTbob has been to a City match will tell you what you need to know

It sucks b/c at their old ground it was loud and wild with their core fans. Their away fans are still great.

But when the city of Manchester gave them that stadium it was just to big for them. Even now you have huge sections of empty seats or gimmick deals like buy one get one free.

In the HD era and high priced tickets where you see fans leaving early in the first few rows even at United, Liverpool Arsenal etc. City just has to accept who they are.
