I believe they can. It's been reported that on the day that many people commit suicide they seem more cheerful to others than they have been. That's because they're going for the quick fix and they're relieved.

Again, you are drawing assumptions. Assuming that is true, it is just as easy for me to say that they were being nice to everyone because they knew they'd never see them again. That is based on nothing.

I've read extensively on it, but I just feel differently than you do.

Read about neurotransmitters and the effect an imbalance can have on consciousness. Read about what the lack of serotonin and dopamine (and/or an increase in norepinephrine) will do to the prefrontal cortex.

I claim none. And you?

What is your life experience with suicide?

In relation to investigating a suicide, it would go a long way in confirming that it was in fact a suicide.

Not this shite again. It always comes up in these threads. Suicidal people are not rational. Selfishness doesn't enter in to it.

And often times don't perceive their suicide as selfish, but rather selfless. Their warped view of themselves and those around them can make them believe they are doing others a favor by killing themselves.

Graduate level work.

1 family member, 1 close friend, several friends (or friends of friends).

One person, for instance, was a lifelong sufferer of Bipolar 1. Another, someone who suffered from long term (diagnosed) depression.

Want to know how I know you've never dealt with a suicidal person?

A. Thats not true.

B. If someone is cheery that day its probably because they think their suffering AND the suffering of others they associate with is about to end.

They aren't rational. Stop applying rational thought and ideas to their situation.

I wouldn't do it, but I have dealt with people at that point in their life. Some of you sound very bitter or uneducated on the subject, or a combination of both.

Agreed. His was more long term - he would go weeks in a state of mania and then weeks in a deep depression. Lock his doors, turn the AC as low as it would go, unplug the phones, shut the blinds, wouldn't answer the door, etc. The manic days, he was hard to keep up with. Constantly working on new projects. Brilliant guy, too. Quite mechanically/technically gifted.

Do you have any legit sources or scientific papers? Have they confirmed this in humans? I want to read up on it, but I don't feel like wading through a bunch of bullshite and misinformation on the internet.

No argument here. But killing yourself is still a cowardly action.

What? Are you asking if its proven humans can have serotonin and/or dopamine deficiencies that causes depression?

I don't have depression and I've never been remotely close to suicidal or anything... but when I get really pissed-off, sad, etc.... sometimes it helps to write my thoughts down on paper.

I think it helps me to organize my thoughts and come up with a plan to overcome my problems when I'm not thinking totally rationally.

Just speaking to what I was saying about what different levels of neurotransmitters will do to the prefrontal cortex. This one is an easy read:

This is your brain in meltdown
