So, I want an old jeep. Yeah, I know I know, Just Empty Every Pocket....

I also understand that I need a reliable "practical" vehicle to tote my kids around in and what not that has functioning climate control and functioning everything else...

Research tells me I could sell my current truck and get into both an old cj7 jeep and a mid-2000's pickup and also pocket about $10k.

I've checked on insurance and I'm looking at about a $10/month increase between the two scenarios.

And before it's asked, we're maxing out 401k's and roths, only debt is about $15k HELOC, and a reasonable mortgage (balance of ~~67% yearly combined income).

Tell me why this is a bad idea...

If so, then buying your current truck was your worst mistake. You must drive a tricked-out Hummer.

It was purchased new for a job I had that required a fairly new vehicle in order to get the full car allowance. I was at the job long enough to pay for a substantial chunk of it.

Thanks for your concern, now back to the topic at hand.

Not necessarily - 1/2 ton pickups, well-optioned can get MSRPs in the upper 40s/low 50s.

In the south, trucks hold their resale better than cars.

Yolo is right. I don't mind driving a 2001 pickup so that I can have some other toys on the side. I don't have to ferry around clients or even coworkers either, though.

well if you have a nice car and the purchase was subsidized by your old employer then I would hold on to it. Especially if it is under warranty still.

Save the money and get an old CJ

car maintenance is a bitch

I am here to tell you it is an excellent idea.

Then again I'm seriously considering dropping $30k on a G wagon with 90,000 miles and impeccable maintenance records. So maybe don't listen to me?

But a CJ is never going to lose that much money, if you buy smartly (there are some seriously delusional sellers out there).

Didn't you just get a toy to consume your time?

do it!!! I bought a '79 CJ7 with 33s on it last year and a rebuilt V8. I drive it 20-30 days a year or so, and love it. My advice is to wait for the right jeep. I looked for 2-3 years, until I found the one I wanted, and bought it the same day.

you are right, I was astonished how minimal adding it to my insurance was. additional $91 to my annual premium.

Do it.

Nothing more fun than old vehicles. Just make sure you have a daily driver because they WILL break down.

I just sold a restored 1976 CJ5 for $6500. It had a refurbished small block in it and was a 3 speed with 4WD. Black top and all new seats and paint. I paid $6300 for it a few years ago.

They do not lose value they just require maintenance.

I am now looking for a mid 60's truck.

Please explain. Doesn't seem like spending more could have gotten you net more.

It's not a bad idea. As long as you are taking care of the rest of your house, then you have to live your life and have some fun.

basically I needed to have a 4 year old or less vehicle to get like $600 or would have received $400 if you had an older vehicle (something to do with their taxes). I could have opted for something used but my truck at the time was old and I went with a new one (save the "shoulda bought used" or "you shoulda kept your old truck" chastisement...). Hindsight obviously 20/20.
