Minnie Minoso, the seemingly ageless Cuban slugger who broke into the majors just two years after Jackie Robinson and turned into the game's first black Latino star, has died, a medical examiner in Illinois said Sunday.
Minoso played 12 of his 17 seasons in Chicago, hitting .304 with 135 homers and 808 RBIs for the White Sox. The White Sox retired his No. 9 in 1983 and there is a statue of Minoso at U.S. Cellular Field.
He played in the majors in the 1940s, 50s, 60s, 70s, & his final game was in 1980.
Saturnino Orestes Armas Minoso Arrieta was selected for nine All-Star games and won three Gold Gloves in left. He was hit by a pitch 192 times, ninth on baseball's career list, and finished in the top four in AL MVP voting four times.
Despite the push by the White Sox and other prominent Latin players, Minoso has never made it to Cooperstown. His highest percentage during his 15 years on the writers' ballot was 21.1 in 1988. He was considered by the Veterans Committee in 2014 and fell short of the required percentage for induction.

Fine player, and as an ambassador, the Sox equivalent of Ernie Banks.

I've got a 1959 Topps card of Minnie. He was good but does not belong in the HOF. He was most famous for getting hit by pitches. But unlike Barry Bonds, he didn't wear a protective elbow guard. He just stuck his bare elbow out there to get hit.

Saw him play 3 or 4 times at Fenway , once when he was with the Indians, the other times when he was with the ChiSox. The Indians game was memorable for me as a kid because it was the first game I had to watch my former hero Jimmy Piersall play in another team's uniform and my Dad picked that game for that reason. I also remember my brother joking about the team having a "Rocky" and a "Minnie" playing in the same outfield.
Baseball has lost a true treasure with Minoso's passing.

He is considered "black" back then but today's players from Cuba/Domenica are not considered "black" I find this odd

Some Cuban/Latin players were in the pros, but only the very light-skinned ones.

Are you retarded?
On what planet are Big Papi or Vladimir Guerrero not 'black'?
