Good read on the origins and staying power of the vitamin myth: LINK /. Vitamin supplements are basically worthless. This is not a conspiracy theory - it's the general consensus of the scientific community. Not to mention, "supplements" have essentially no oversight, regulation, or quality control measures.
quote:

In recent years, researchers have debunked, over and over, the idea that vitamin supplements confer any measureable benefit at all—but still, around half of Americans take them regularly. Together with other dietary supplements, they enjoy a reputation for nutritional power that stretches far beyond their true capabilities.

Second biggest scam in America IMO. Diamonds are, by far, #1 - but that's a topic for a different thread.

Ever take zinc, ephedra, aspirin, caffeine, and calcium?

It may or may not make you an animal.

i used to doubt it, until it was discovered that I had a vit d deficiency. I am at extreme risk of skin cancer so I apply sunscreen liberally, and don't drink milk....

anyway i started taking D and a multi, and i feel better.

Calcium and vitamin D (for those with osteopenia/osteoporosis or deficiency of either with an upcoming orthopaedic surgery) are a rare exception to the efficacy of vitamins - those have been shown to work.

Vitaman A and C are very very good for you... Plus a supplement only works IF you eat a balanced and healthy diet..... Most do not.

Multiply that by 150 million (the number of Americans estimated to take them), then multiply by the average number of vitamins/supplements taken by the average vitamin-taker (I don't know what this number is), and you'll start to get a better idea.

Just the thought of 150 million people willingly and gullibly putting an unregulated, unidentified substance into their body on a daily basis is a little startling.

You know vitamins are essential nutrients meaning you will die if you don't have them for a period of time. There are still plenty of folks in the US who are vitamin deficient.....many diagnosed by medical doctors. This thread and you are both stupid.

If they are basically worthless, why do they need oversight?

I think that people are misunderstanding what this study says. It says that if you have a healthy diet then vitamin supplements aren't going to help you beyond that.

What this study doesn't say is that if you don't have a healthy diet and are lacking something that taking vitamin supplements won't help you.

I fall into the latter category and believe that taking vitamin supplements can help give you the minimum essential materials that you need.

Saying a particular vitamin is good for you and saying a supplement or multivitamin is good for you are two different things. Unless you're grossly deficient of a particular vitamin (which is very rare in the US), you're going to be pissing it all away, literally.

Because unfortunately, worthless or not, millions of people continue to ingest them every day.
