A few years ago I was with a group that spent time in the Andes. We went from sea level on the flight over to a parking lot at over 15,000 feet on the side of Mt. Cotopaxi the next day. Really bad idea, at least half the group was quite ill.
I do like being above timberline in Colorado and have done Long's Peak (14,256) several times but mostly just like to get above the trees. You feel like you are on top of the world. But I have enough sense to allow a few days to get used to higher altitude first.

Definitely. Longs peak is no joke mountain. That's another one that kills people every couple of years, mainly just from the sheer number of people that climb it. Also, a good number of those people have no business climbing either, so that doesn't help. Did you do the keyhole route or the loft route? That's one I have always wanted to climb.
Another recurring theme for mountain climbing is you need to know when to turn around. No mountain is worth your life or possibly the lives who would save you.

I live about 2 hrs from mt Whitney, have any of yall ever trekked that one? About to put in for a permit for the summer

Yeah I've heard lots of people do it. I like to think I could handle it but I'd probabbly need to make it a 2 day thing.

I like climbing mountains. Me @ 13,775
Highest I've done is a 14er in Colorado but that wasnt a technical ascent. I don't ever see myself doing anything too crazy but a a Denali trip is something I would perhaps like to do one day. Depending on the time of year it can be just as hard as any of the other big mountains.
Sadly my climbing buddies are getting old and/or married so I need to find some new climbing partners.
Highest I've done is a 14er in Colorado but that wasnt a technical ascent. I don't ever see myself doing anything too crazy but a a Denali trip is something I would perhaps like to do one day. Depending on the time of year it can be just as hard as any of the other big mountains.

Heck, even Rainier at 14,410 kills folks every year. It killed six in one swoop last year. That mountain has over 100 fatalities for being just a speed bump compared to other peaks.

I've always been impressed with Mt. St. Elias on the Southern Coast. It's vertical rise is second only to Denali in the world (as far as land based mts. are concerned.)
Pretty impressive to be at sea level and see this 18k mountain. The Malaspina Glacier is in the foreground. It's also a premiere surfing location (believe it or not)

Yes it does. The prominence of the mountain makes it a tough climb. As well as the extensive glaciers and associated crevasses. This is also a climb I want to do. I would hire a guide for this though since my glacier experience is somewhat low.

This is why I love going to Lake Tahoe. Climbing routes one day and relaxing on the beach the next. Best of both worlds.

Do you live near mountains? I've always wondered how people get into mountaineering if they don't live near mountains. I'm not sure a one or two week visit to Colorado each year would be enough time to get into it. I'm into backpacking/hikinh and one day would like to take it up a notch.

HQ is in a town a few miles North of here. They also run a climbing school as well as high altitude climbing services.

No I live down here in the south LA swamps. I dream of living in the mountains though.
How it started was a trip to visit my friend(who had a little climbing experience) that moved to Sacramento. We went to Yosemite and wanted to give Half Dome a try(did a winter ascent with the cables down). I was bitten by the hiking/climbing bug after that.
We started doing about 3 trips a year but that isn't enough to really get good. To supplement I hit the local climbing gym to stay in shape and practice with my rope/gear. I also built this to practice at my house.
With so few trips it has taken a while to progress to bigger objectives. I've just learned I have to be patient. Like thinking ahead 5 years type stuff.

Yeah, my friend who has done the seven summits used them. They also do heliskiing in the Chilkat Mts.

Did Tahoe last summer with my family. Absolutely awesome to go from the beach to 9000ft in the blink of an eye
Had the opportunity to do Rainier many, many years ago but decided it wasn't for me. My coworkers just did Mt. Adams not too long ago for a reenlistment ceremony on the summit.
