I keep reading articles about this topic.
But, don't the roles basically get offered to the top dogs without having to audition...
Why would a CD get an award when they aren't finding talent or casting the big names for these projects

It would be like Pat Riley getting lauded for signing the big 3. LeBron, Bosh, and Wade were good?!?! No shite.

Does that category exist?

There is an art to it. There's a reason the casting director for valentines day didn't win an Oscar.

b/c there are usually quite a bit more than a big name star or two in a film that a casting director works with.

For a one or two person movie you'd have a point. I've heard it argued that casting is the only major aspect of putting together a movie that lacks a specific award.
The complaint of people who are casting directors is that the directors don't want to acknowledge the crucial role they play in choosing the right person for the right part and how this shapes the final product. Sometimes an inspired choice makes a movie more than anything else.

Multiple choice:
1) There's no Oscar for Casting Directors
2) It was a woman
Just kidding, they don't hire women
