Random: were you a fan of Archie's CC?

Henderson and Manning are it for me when I think about when I first started really following the Saints. Especially with preseason games since, if I remember correctly, they were hardly ever on TV if at all. Were you a fan? I have fond memories of that tandem, but I wonder if it's just nostalgia.

Archie Manning was an incredible commentator. I don't even want to comprehend Deke. I like the guy, he seems like a well-liked man, but he can't come close to Archie.
ETA: I meant Hokie...sorry.

Archie was much better than Hokie. He has a dry sense of humor which went well with Jim Henderson.

Yup. Had a delivery more akin to Dandy Don I thought.
Don't get to use akin as much as I would like.

Archie was a good ole boy like Don Meredith, while Henderson was an acerbic New Yorker, sort of Bob Costas with a little David Letterman thrown in.
Although completely opposite, their styles meshed perfectly. My favorite booth team of all time.

I still remember listening to a game in the late 80s - second half starts, Jim Henderson is doing all the talking, but I don't think much of it. A few minutes go by and Jim says MAN THE LINE MUST HAVE BEEN LONG AT THE HOT DOG STAND! WELCOME BACK ARCHIE! Clearly late to the pressbox, Archie sits down and starts calling the game as usual, sounding slightly annoyed.
The rest of the game they were taking passive aggressive, good natured digs at one another. shite was hilarious and almost as entertaining as the game itself.

Every time there was a player from Mississippi mentioned, Jim would get in a dig: "Ah yes, Belzoni... Suburb of Drew"
There was one game where the Saints looked like crap and fell behind right after the kickoff, and Archie said," If you don't mind I have to leave, Olivia had some errands for me to run..." and Jim immediately shot back, "Siddown! You're not going anywhere. You have a million stories and I want to hear every one of them."
But of all my memories of Archie on the radio, the one I'll always remember is not very pleasant. Against the 49ers (in '88 I think) with the Dome Patrol holding Montana and Rice to 10 points. But Drunkass Hebert could not get into the end zone and settled for 4 field goals and a 12-10 lead late. Niners get the ball back and slowly drive downfield for the winning FG. I will never forget Archie's incredulous voice as Joe M. worked into FG range: "I don't believe it, I don't believe it..."

Henderson and Archie may have been the best team affiliated broadcast team in the country.

Did Archie quit when Peyton started UT or when he got drafted?

Well, I thought he decided to stop broadcasting because he didn't want to miss any of the games on Saturdays.

Kafka- I remember the game you are talking about very well. It was the 1st. game of the 1990 season on Monday night football. That was the year Bobby Hebert sat out. I was in the Superdome witnessing the biggest QB mismatch in the history of the NFL - Joe Montana versus John Fourcade.

Archie Manning and Jim Henderson doing Saints games were the GOLD STANDARD.
Both are great at what they do, and they worked incredibly well together.
