The Vegas bookies had American Sniper at the bottom of the heap, yesterday. But I loved it, and the American people have shown the Academy what picture they thought was the best in 2015.

Are people really surprised that a movie about a bunch of actors acting won Best Picture?

Bird man, imitation game, and grand Budapest hotel were better movies

I didn't really care for Imitation Game. Cumberbatch was great, the movie itself? not so much. Same with AS, Cooper was great, the movie? not so much

Grand Budapest was great

I still haven't seen Birdman

Really? I thought it was great. The fact that Alan Turing isn't a household name is almost criminal. It is a story that needed to be told.

No I appreciated it very much. I just don't think the quality of the movie was good enough to be nominated.

Can I say I liked the story, but not the movie?

Yes, that's far more creative than the Academy usually acknowledges.

Which is great, but that doesn't mean the movie itself was worthy of an Oscar.

Lots of people complaining about Boyhood, even though it still didn't win.

For the record, American Sniper did win one Oscar (sound editing, but still... this was a "share the wealth" year, they made sure it got something). I haven't seen ANY of the films nominated so I can't comment on quality, but American Sniper seems incredibly thematically similar to Hurt Locker, which won just a few years ago. More than anything, that hurt its chances.

Also, the Academy gave the best documentary Oscar to Crisis Hotline, Veterans Press One, a film about the struggles war veterans face, particularly with regard to suicide. Any "Hollywood hates the miliatry" narrative has to square this circle.

So John Travolta should never be invited back to the Academy Awards. Holy shite.

The contents of this year's Academy Awards goodie bags have been revealed to be worth more than $125,000.

Highlights include: a $1,500 three-night stay at a resort in Tuscany; a luxury train journey through the Canadian Rockies worth $14,500; French Mediterranean sea salts worth $1,500; a silver necklace bearing the latitude and longitude of the Dolby Theater where the Oscars were held worth $150; a glamping trip valued at $12,500; a $800 cotton candy and dessert voucher; a $250 Haze vaporiser; a $250 Afterglow vibrator; a Wellness 360 gift pack worth $1,200; a full year of Audi A4 car rental worth $20,000 and a Reset Yourself makeover package coming in at over $14,200.

Though there's plenty more on top of all this, the highest-valued item is apparently a $20,000 gift certificate giving you the ability to have Enigma Life founder Olessia Kantor come and meet all the nominees individually and offer insight on "their 2015 horoscope, analyze dreams and teach them mind control techniques.”

Presumably to make sure they can lock down more votes next year?
It's important to note the Academy doesn't endorse the release of the gift bags, and they're being distributed by Distinctive Asset. In 2006 it was actually voted to stop their distribution after an IRS agreement, though it seems a rethink may have happened at some stage.

Again, anti-war movies do win.

Truly unbelievable...

Makes it funny when you consider Patricia Arquette received one of those yet complains about gender inequality.

Gender inequality is real and affects men and women in America. This is not a women's issue. It is an issue everyone should be interested in.

It's not anti-war. It's pro-soldier.

Guess we will see it differently then.

And question, do you think a documentary about the crew of the Enola Gay would ever win an Oscar??

This 100%. Not mad though. $500 richer because of it, and it was a great movie

It depends on what you mean by "hates the military". Awarding a movie that highlights veteran struggles is exactly the kind of thing you would expect Hollywood to do even if you thought Hollywood was anti-military. More precisely they are anti-war, but they are seen as being anti-military because of that.

There were a lot of great modern war stories that could have been told in the last 15 years. Instead we got Stop-Loss, In the Valley of Elah, Lions for Lambs, etc.

Hollywood doesn't hate veterans, they just think they are rubes.

If I had to speak for veterans, I would guess that they would like to see war movies that present a balanced view of things. Yes, war sucks, yes we have been in murky waters since Vietnam, but the veterans themselves are not geopolitical strategists. They have fought bravely and and on the whole been a credit to their country. For the most part, what Hollywood has produced has not even attempted to tell their sorry well.

There's no "The Best Years of Our Lives" coming out of Hollywood today.
