That is a debarked, the big gears are called bull wheels, that rotate log so the head (missing) can take bark off of log, tank was for hydraulic oil

now, that makes sense...the gears are not for transmitting power, but for scarring and scraping bark off of logs...

should have known fish has seen one of these before!...

Yep. There was one under a shade next to our cotton gin.
Same saw mill that had killed my grandfather.
