I'd like to run some cable in the walls for the living room and bedroom, is it a pain to do? I already have cable wire dropped down from the attic in each room so the holes are already in the walls behind the tvs

If you have a little bit of knowledge i'd say not hard at all. I'm sure there are youtube videos as well that could help.

If these are ethernet patch cables terminated at both ends they don't really lend themselves to punching down onto wall receptacles or patch panels. You'll need to buy a spool of Cat6 twisted pair cable for that. You can use the patch cables to fish the new cable through the walls.

Not too bad. They have wall plates that have a coax and RJ45. I used a couple for my house. I used the coax cable wire as the fishing wire too. Tied a string to it and pulled it up/down after taping the Cat5 to it.

You said cat5, I'd recommend you use cat 6 plenum. The plenum is meant for walls and attics. It does not emit poisonous gases in case there is ever a fire.

Cat 6 is much faster than CAT5/5e. If you plan to stream movies you'll appreciate the upgrade.

I find it odd that they installed an RJ45 jack but no wire in the wall... interesting

He should use Cat6 if he's running. I did it about 4 years ago with Cat5 and have no complaints. Also doubt home user will max out either cable. I stream just fine.

I installed the combo outlet and ran the wire.

Don't waste the money on plenum cable for a house. It's a huge price difference and a complete waste in a house. Plenum cable is for commercial buildings that have a plenum space. Yes, standard riser cable does release harmful gases in a fire, but it is not a concern with residential homes. You would die of smoke inhalation long before the cable gases ever reached you.

Plenum is meant for an open air return celing. A house is ducted return. No need for plenum in a house. It would be overkill to use.

You could just use your existing coax.

MOCA on existing coax

This is how I do it at my house. Works great!

MOCA limits you to 10/100.

What difference does it make if I only have internet speed of 50 megs?

I would consider going this route.

You can save a bunch of money and 0 hassle. Just plug them in and go.

They use the existing wiring in your house

Cat6 will do absolutely nothing for his movie streaming.

That said always better to go Cat6 for future proofing.

From what he stated the runs will be easy. He has an attic and he already has a path to the locations. All he needs are some glow rods from Home Depot to fish down the walls.

For the small difference in price I'd run Cat6 to future proof.

It's not too bad as long as your walls aren't insulated. Just get you some fishing tape or fishing rods and some electrical tape and a spool of cable. Punch to keystone jacks that snap into wall plates. At the central location where all the wires are, if you want it to be clean, get an RJ-45 punch block that mounts to the wall or in a wall mount rack.

Or better yet, a patch panel.
