And I think I saw/read at some point that David Spade never really loved Hollywood Minute because he felt bad for ragging on celebrities and it felt mean, or something like that. Anybody else remember that?

I don't remember that but it would be a strangely hypocritical thing for him to say since he later did The Showbiz Show, which was basically a 30-minute version of Hollywood Minute.

Great read.

Few people have made me laugh harder, and more often, then Eddie Murphy.

Hulu has the entire episode

I watched the rest of it on NBC's site.

Loved the Wayne's World skit.

And the running joke with Murray about Jon Lovitz being dead was hilarious.

Also saw the tribute to dead cast members...I had no idea Jan Hooks had died.

It's a little thin skinned but he got pissed b/c it really is true that Eddie save the show from cancellation.

It's Spade going back and trying to whitewash his career now that he's the punchline and not the up and comer. Hollywood Minute MADE Spade, and he knows it.

That said, he was willing to laugh at himself back then. He made fun of Steve Martin once, and the camera pulled out, and Martin was standing behind Spade drinking a pina colada. He kicked Spade out of the chair (to which Spade said "yes sir") and then proceeded to mock Spade for being a nobody. It was a good bit.

But Spade's comedy has always been mean. That's fine, it's what he's good at, but it's hard to be 40 and be as vicious. Age mellows you, and I think he's a bit embarrassed by the potshots he took.

Sounds like Eddie needs to get over himself. It's comedy. Just laugh at yourself and move on
I can kind of get it. You would imagine there is some kind of "don't turn on your own" mentality

eddie carried that show while he was there, it may not even be on the air anymore if not for him

they poked fun at jimmy fallon on celebrity jeopardy after he left ( I think Will Ferrell was hosting) and fallon did an adam sandler impression

you'd think there would be some institutional loyalty, but there isn't

I would just laugh and move on, but I can understand being kind of peeved about it

it seems like there was a lot of disputes over the years and you could see some of them play out during it.

I'm guessing Lorne Michaels has made a few enemies over the years.

He was not only mad at Spade, but he was pissed that Lorne let the joke on the air. I remember Eddie saying that it wasn't about the joke, it was about the betrayal.

This is also bizarre, as Eddie never worked for Lorne. Murphy was hired in 1980, halfway through the first-non Lorne season. He quit in 1984, a year before Lorne returned to the show. Yes, Eddie kept the show going, but Lorne wanted to put it on hiatus anyway. It's not like Lorne has a whole lot of loyalty to Eddie (which is also why there's likely never been a reunion).

There are way too many comedians taking things way too seriously in all of these stories. It's ok for any of them to make racist/stereotypical jokes, but the second a joke is made at their expense it's taboo. It's comedy... get over it.

Once Eddie said he wouldn't do it, then there really should have never been any reason for Rock to come out and make a big deal about him being there.

They needed to do that. Eddie is the most important cast member of all time and he didn't show up for SNL 25.

Yeah, but there's a big difference between and impression and saying that someone's career is dead.

No I agree, I was kind of miffed they made fun of sandler and Fallon (especially since he was the golden child)

between all of the interviews, articles and books, one thing is abundantly clear

Lorne michaels is a son of a bitch...and people are terrified of him

Eddie needs to get over it. He's obviously had much success since that joke was made, what was it 1993? There could have been some kind of a Murphy throws it back at Spade moment for the 40th celebration. Eddie missed out on a great opportunity.

No, he was on a severe nose dive

Eddie Murphy was the biggest fricking star in the 80s

Harlem nights
Vampire in Brooklyn

He started getting killed and his career never recovered

Shred and nutty were brief moments where he came up for air

Hasn't Eddie made like a billion dollars from Shrek?

Also, did Harlem Nights bomb?
