Cannot find them in any stores I go to and the quality online is very sketchy/hit or miss to me. What are the certain characteristics that make a good decanter set and where is the best place to buy?

I don't think it is exactly safe to put alcohol in Crystal for over an hour. Certainly not days.

quote:

Quote: Blum supplied three lead-crystal decanters from home. He and Graziano cleansed each decanter and poured in port. Two days later, they began periodic samplings of the wine. "When we analyzed the first sample, I couldn't believe it," Graziano says. Lead showed a steady increase, from an initial level of 89 micrograms of lead per liter to between 2,160 and 5,330 [microgram'/l four months later. White wine doubled its lead concentrations within an hour of being poured into one lead-crystal glass, and tripled within four hours, they found.

no one's leaving wine in a decanter for days ... bottled wine should be drunk within 3 days ... decanted wine should be drunk that day ...

It would be for whiskey. Now, beverage aside, is there a limit on how long whiskey can safely be placed inside a decanter before it goes bad?

ah ... assumed it was meant for wine ...

i've only used a decanter a few times for whiskey, but it was just for a few nights or a party ... imagine it helped some, but i wouldn't think leaving it there for over a month would help ...

quote:

According to a statement issued last week by the Lead Industries Association (LIA), the alcohol study suggests "there is negligible risk" from beverages placed in lead-crystal barware "for short periods of time, such as during a meal."

If you leaving it in there for more than a day or two, get a glass decanter

I have a couple of Ravenscroft decanters. I keep a scotch in one and a bourbon in the other. They are mainly used just for looks as opposed to a wine decanter which is to allow to breath and separate the debris. I have several of those in Reidel.

Most all new decanters are lead free so storing isn't really an issue but you do want on whiskey decanters a good seal to keep air out.

I think some are confused. This is a lead free whiskey decanter. Keep in here as long as you like.

These are wine decanters. You do not put whiskey in them.

And the length of time it stays is relative to the wine. I poured a 2002 Zinfandel around 5 this afternoon because it's old and needs plenty of time to smooth out. Have about half left and it will sit until tomorrow evening and will be fine. Much past that it will be vinegar.

Amazon! bed Bath and Beyond, Pier One, Sur La Table! Williams Sonoma.

Hell probably even Wal Mart and Dillard's. Plenty of places.
