Just got invited on a hog hunt at a ranch on Bull Shoals Lake (MO/AR). I've got a Ruger Mini 30 I'm thinking of taking. What scope would make this a good hog assassin? Should I step up and buy a .308 or is the Mini 30 enough?

mini 30 fine, need no more than cheap 3x9 or even open sights likely.

Leupold VXHog is about 200 dollars. It is nice and illuminated. 1-4 power is plenty for most if you dont plan on shooting past 200.

Edit: my bad, vxhog with illuminated is an extra 200.

How close do you plan on getting? A good reflex sight would be suitable to around 100 - 150 yards. Lot of inexpensive 1-4x variable options too.

This is going to be in brush. I just looked at the Leopold hog scope online. That one may be perfect.

You should hunt open sights in thick brush especially if you're stalking with a semi-auto.

In Brush, that mini-30 with open sights would be ideal.
Other option would be a red dot and shoot with both eyes open.

Do the 1-4 variables with a 20mm objective work as well in low light as the 3-9X variables with 40 or 50 mm objectives?

Probably good enough such that you couldn't tell the difference. Leupold VX3 20mm comes to mind.
