Did Rooney make a movement to deceive the keeper? If not then technically its not offsides. Its absolute bullshite but unfortunately I don't think that situation falls into the interference definition according to the laws.

Well then he didn't gain an advantage according to the laws. The rule clearly needs to be changed though.
