What is Lebrons reason for never doing the dunk contest?

I get it now that he's older, less explosive, and needs his rest. Why did he never do it his first 5-8 years in the league?
How was that a good PR move? He likely would've won a few just bc who he is, now it's something he will never be able to claim

LeBron could do a layup in the dunk contest and the players and celebs would go clippers bench on him while he receives all 10's.

That's what I'm saying, why didn't he participate in a few when he was younger? Almost all the greats have done it

I remember reading something during his rookie season that since he didn't make the All-Star Team his rookie year he would never do the dunk contest.

Really?
Lebron definitely has some character flaws, but he's never struck me as petty like that

He's matured a lot, but 18 year old Chosen One Lebron...prob first time he was told no.

It would still suck. They should do away with it

LeBron still dunks with a ferocity few players can replicate.

Another in a long list of reasons Kobe > Lebron

Yea but I'm not sure he has the hang time anymore for all those in air tricks and stuff.
He could probably win though with just a huge two handed rim rocker from relatively far away, followed up with a one handed off the backboard double pump

I remember when he won the HS dunk contest and they booed because all his dunks sucked compared to a lesser known guy.

Probably why he never did another one

With or without the dunk contest, LeBron has been the most talked about athlete since 2003. I don't think it really matters what the dunk contest did or didn't do for him from a public relations standpoint.

Honestly, I think it's lack of creativity. He just jumps high and throws it down with force.

I believe he went up against Shannon Brown. Dude was fun as hell to watch at Michigan State.

Its a no-win situation.

- He actually loses (no win)
- He wins but the public opinion is he won due to his name (no win)
- He wins...but he is Lebron and that was expected of him (win...but just barely)

I think he may have had intended to at one point but now he realizes he gains more if he doesn't enter it. Now people will always wonder what if Lebron had been in the contest.

MJ yes. But Lebron passed Kobe up a while ago. Only thing Kobe has over him now are some rings Shaq carried him to.

Because you can't team up with superstars to help you win it.

because the dunk contest has been reserved for younger players who weren't really famous for like 20 years

lebron was almost an all star his rookie year and then was an all star, so there wasn't really a need for him to do it

kevin durant didn't ever do the dunk contest

anthony davis hasn't done the dunk contest, for a recent example
