I agree to an extent, but you can't include Castle in this. There is a ton of back story in there that you can't just pick up in one episode. Yes there are filler episodes, but they have that in any series.
My wife watches Castle. It drives me nuts that she watches that show, but has refused every attempt I've made over the years to get her to watch Firefly. You don't know how many times I've said "You know, you like Nathan Fillion in this and he's a million times better in Firefly"

I wouldn't call them bad, per se. That's not entirely fair.
They are well-made mediocrities. You can watch the show and know every story and character beat, and there's a familiar rhythm to everything. They are well-shot, well-acted, and decently written. There's just nothing surprising to them. It is like assembly line product.

I never thought about the age thing, but it might be true. My parents are in their 70's and I know my dad got into CSI for a while and my mom has told me several times about Castle (which does sound a little different than the standard procedural).
Aside from the repetitiveness, my issue is just how flat the dialogue and acting is. I got into the original Law & Order for a while when they had a great cast and consistently good guest stars, but the story lines alone are not enough to stay hooked.

Used to love it but I hate how it's become 30 minutes of watching the unsub torture people.
SVU is really the only one I still watch, mostly because of Kelli Giddish

I watch Castle because of Stana Kasic mostly, although the show is good enough for her to carry it for me. The whole ensemble works well together.
It can be formulaic though - you know there will be a red herring obvious suspect that isn't it and someone shown in passing early on will end up being the killer.
They have had some decent arcs but I don't know that they have any of those still going. It might be time to have a baby and end the show.
