At 21 Shaq was in his 2nd season with the Magic and AD is in his 3rd with the Pelicans:

SHAQ - 29.3 ppg 13.2 rpg & 2.4 bpg

AD - 24.5 ppg 10.3 rpg & 2.7 bpg

Amazing to think about Shaq's numbers when you realize how good AD is right now.

I know that AD is more skilled, but Shaq was just plain dominate.

They started allowing zone defenses & mainly they changed the rule where if you intentional foul off the ball in the final 2 minutes of the game, the other team gets 2 free throws and gets the ball back.

Shaquille forced rule changes.

He was largely responsible for the NBA deciding to do away with the illegal defense(Zone) policy as well as the institution of the defensive 3 seconds in the lane policy.

Analytics tell a story. Wins and losses tell another. By Shaq's 3rd year he had the Magic in the finals. Don't see that with ole AD.

Not arguing who was better in year 3, but that Magic team was awesome. Penny, Dennis Scott, Nick Anderson, Horace Grant.

And Jordan was nice enough to let someone else have a try that year.

If the Pels had any player the level of Penny Hardaway you might have a point.

Penny was the bomb, but the other guys are pretty similar to Gordon, Evans & Anderson. I would give edge to Horace Grant over Anderson though.

Still had to go through a tough Pacers team with Reggie Miller and the flying dutchman, Rik Smits
