Did you actually see them play live? If so you wouldn't think it was laughable at all. Their only loss was on the road at WM. WM scored 1 offensive TD on a 30 yard run or so by the fullback. Other than that, I believe they held WM to 100 yards or less. Acadiana lost 4 games and gave up 16.6 points per game. They were hot at the end and won it all. Doesn't mean they were some all time great defense. Byrd gave up 11.7 ppg and actually won more games than Acadiana.

I didn't even mention Acadiana, you did. But since you did, lets compare the two.

Byrd played 8 teams with a record of .500 or worse. Out of the 5 teams above .500 one was a 2-A school and one was 3-A. Holding Calvary Baptist to 14 points was great. They beat Zachary the first game of the season. That was a toss up game. But the rest of the teams don't tell me much.

Acadiana only played 4 teams with records .500 or below. They played a 6-A team from Alabama, they played Rummel, and of course the district we are in has had 3 different teams in the dome the last 5 years. Then you add on the insane amount of injuries and turnovers and its an achievement that they ONLY gave up 16 points a game.

Lets talk playoffs.

Byrd played Fountainbleau, East Ascension, and WM. They gave up 45 points to 3 teams that were 4-7, 6-6, and 11-3 respectively.

In Acadianas case, they played 5 teams in the playoffs, but for comparisons sake I'm only going to use the best 3 teams. Ponchatoula, Zachary, and Destrehan. Acadiana gave up 48 points to teams that were 11-1, 12-2, and 14-1. These three teams AVERAGED around 40 something the whole year, 3 of the highest scoring offenses in 5-A. Two of those teams were undefeated. One of them beat WM, something Byrd failed to do.

Make no mistake, Acadiana won state because they did have the best defense in 5-A. They had 5-A's defensive most valuable player. They did that with the starting MLB playing both ways.

Comparatively, its no contest. They don't give out trophies for holding WM to under 100 yds. They do give out trophies for holding Destrehan and Zachary to only 10 points total though.

Byrd played those teams in the playoffs because they were 10-0 and the #1 seed. Acadiana played the teams they did because they were 6-4. Again, Acadiana won state. Congrats. You put it together when it counted. Doesn't mean they were the best defense.

Byrd would have beaten Destrehan in the semifinals. It would have been in Shreveport and that long trip would have been huge. They just couldn't pull it off at West Monroe because their offense and special teams screwed them. 4 turnovers, 1 recovered for a touchdown, and 8 three and outs for the offense/special teams. The one touchdown the defense actually gave up came after a bad punt gave WM the ball at the 35. That was a 4 yard run and a 31 yard TD run. Other than that, zip. 2 field goals set up by the offense not moving the ball.

I watched Acadiana in the Dome and loved every minute of it. I was pulling for them to win. Byrd still had the better D
