Question for the tax folks -- never received a refund

This is from a previous filing. My refund was held up for some reason; I contacted the IRS and they said that they have no idea why the refund was held up. And that they'll contact me within 30 days to let me know of a decision. I received a letter stating that they couldn't find my return or refund in the system. Wtf? I have zero idea what to do.

What year is this?
Do you have proof of filing? If e-file, should have some sort of confirmation. If paper file, did you send return receipt?
if IRS has no record of your return, you need to file again, or prove to them that you already filed. You might have better luck contacting the IRS Taxpayer Advocate.

Filed via turbotax.
And it was two years back. I've called the IRS # so many times to no avail I end up just getting pissed off.

Call Turbotax to see what sort of confirmation numbers you can get. Get a copy of your filed return, and then call the IRS Advocate.
The mainline IRS office is so overwhelmed right now that it is completely useless.

I can still pull up the old tax return on the IRS website...this makes absolutely no sense.

Just pulled up my 2012 tax return. So I should call the IRS advocate line?
Appreciate the help

If you have accessed the IRS website, and you were able to locate a Transcript of Return, then you should also be able to access a Transcript of Account for the year in question. It will show when your return was received by the IRS, when it was processed, the amount of any overpayment you had, and what was done with the overpayment. With this information you should be able o call the IRS and resolve the matter by asking them to review the Transcript of Account with you. This should allow them to identify what went wrong and correct it.

Have the account transcript right here. Should I call the IRS directly or the IRS advocate?

There's a code 570 from 9-30-2013. When I called the IRS, they said this should have already been resolved.

There's a code 570 from 9-30-2013.
I'm kind of curious why a code 570 from 9/30/2013 wouldn't have been resolved by now, and some other code reflecting the resolution be included on your Transcript of Account. My first guess as to why the code 570 would be the last relevant entry would be that you had income in prior years and did not file a return for any applicable years. As such, your liability for any of those years would not be determined.
My recommendation is you go back to the IRS website and request copies of your Transcript of Account and Wage and Income Transcript for prior years to see if you have any unfiled returns that may be the cause.

I worked for a year before law school, so the 570 doesn't make any sense. I even had an accountant run the #s from that year and it was off by like $20 (filed via turbotax). The guy I spoke with from the IRS said it should have already been resolved and that I would receive an update within 30 days--the update said they couldn't find my return
I can't even get anyone on the phone from the IRS advocate #. This is a gigantic joke

Are you going to charge them interest and penalties?

If it's possible, I would love to. It's such a frustrating process to not even be able to get someone on the phone
The refund isn't huge, but I am a student, so it would be pretty nice to actually receive.
