If so, what did you think about the area? Would you live there?

Is Tahoe an option? If no, don't do it. It's like Tunica with worse scenery.

Went to Reno.

I shot a man there just to watch him die.

I always fly into Reno to go skiing in Lake Tahoe. Reno is an absolute shithole. I would never visit there EVER unless just passing through to go skiing. The only place worth visiting in Nevada is Las Vegas.

I'll put in for Hoover Dam, even if you have to fly to Vegas to get there.

I can't argue with that since I've never been there, but what exactly makes Reno a shithole when compared to similarly sized cities like Baton Rouge?

There really is little there. Was there for a football game and it is literally 4 casinos downtown, and the university a half mile up the road. Really great wings at the Wolf Pack bar, and Silver Legacy casino pays out, but it's a way to land near Tahoe. Really, nothing else.

I lived in Sparks for about 6 months back in 2005 while I worked in Reno. There wasn't much in Sparks at the time, but it wasn't a bad commute nor a bad place to live. Reno was a good time.

I went to Reno for a conference in 2010. The economy, by that I mean gambling industry, was suffering then. Great outdoors including the mountains, Rancho San Rafael Park, and obviously Tahoe is nearby which is beautiful. It has great transportation infrastructure and it's actually not too far of a drive to San Francisco for weekend outings.
I actually liked Reno and would give it a try.

Family vacation as a 13 year old.

It basically sucked arse.

Circus Circus wasn't that bad. Virginia City was about an hour drive, was cool for a history person.

Unless you're headed to tahoe, I'd avoid it.

I wouldn't go only there for vacation. That said, it's a pretty good place to live. If you're just looking at the downtown, yes, it's junky compared to Vegas. And it's a bit of a cookie cutter suburban area. That said, it's just a really good jumpoff point to do a lot of outdoor activities, and much cheaper than Tahoe or most places in California (though Californians came in and ran up the house prices about ten years ago because it was so cheap). San Francisco is only like 3.5 hours away, too.

I can't speak to Sparks, but there are some really nice neighborhoods on the south edge of town, just off Mt. Rose Highway.

Only been there when flying in to Tahoe but based on what I've seen I'd avoid it. Seems gross and low rent. I will say that the topography is pretty cool being at the very edge of the great basin and the Sierra Nevadas. Carson City is even worse.

I find it odd that it is a boring, suburban town when it's the only sizable city in America that has legalized prostitution.

Reno seems like it could have a lot of potential. The demographics of Reno are actually pretty good. Weather isn't bad and it's at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains so it can be scenic. On the other side of that is California. Many businesses from California could relocate there to take advantage of Nevada's no state income taxes. The infrastructure isn't bad. They've just got the Tesla Gigafactory and the Switch datacenter.
