Do these vary? Most require $1,000? $3,000?

Seems about right for "respected" funds... Although I've seen $250 minimum on some.

LGILX is a good fund with a minimum initial purchase of only $100 and minimum additional contribution of only $1
Also, it can be bought commision free through Schwab

Fidelity SP 500 fund I just bought into was $2,500. Also some funds vary within themselves depending on the account type (brokerage, IRA, Group retirement)
ETA: FUSEX (Fidelity SP 500): Initial Investment 2,500, Initial IRA Investment 2,500, Initial Group Retirement Investment 500, and Required Balance (charge a fee if your balance gets lower) 2,000
