Serious question about inbounding the ball

Why is it so hard when the team with the ball has the distinct advantage?
You line the team up in a row. When the inbounder slaps the ball, a designated player breaks away from the line and the inbounder has a half second or more with said player in the clear. The player breaking out of the line knows which direction he is breaking. The defenders do not.
I am not a negatiger by any means. I am optimistic almost to a fault. But in bounding the ball has become very difficult for this team.

Great question...never held my breath so much during such a routine event as the inbounds pass. Bad enough holding breath during free throws...very unhealthy.
