Headed to KW in a few weeks. Any one ever been fishing there? Should I do near shore or offshore?

if you have ever fished offshore out of LA I would fish inshore in KW and go for either snook or tarpon depending on what's in season. I moved back to LA from Florida in 2005 so I don't remember the seasons
That being said, from what I've seen on facebook they are catching some nice Mahi in Key West right now

Honestly the best fishing is in Key Largo or Marathon. Key West fishing is hit or miss. If you just want to have a good time and catch some fish go with Gulf Stream try and go on a night trip. They are a blast. If you want try charter fishing, call ahead of time or head over to Stock Island to Hurrican Hole Restaurant and Marina. They have a lot of good guides there that can take you to do what ever. Tarpon, shipwreck fishing, Pompano, etc.

Hurricane Hole is fun.
Fishing is hit or miss. Go during the early Summer to catch the Tarpon run, not sure what's biting now. It will be a fun trip regardless, beautiful water. At the least you can tear arse on big bull sharks.

Tons of good charters. And right now mahi are hot. Good wrecks and reefs also close by for snapper and grouper. Back country is good for snook, permit, bones.
I fish with a guy quite often out of Big Pine Key which is about 30 miles north of KW. Jim Peabody. Excellent guide know the waters well.

How much does he run? I am probably taking my kid fishing down there for spring break as long as he keeps all As until then.

He is about the average down there price wise. Rush is a good dude, Key West native, etc. He was real good friends with Jose Wejebe (was actually on his show a few times as a matter of fact).

For something different down there, try the backcountry fishing. This guy is great. I have fished with him twice and have a buddy that has fished with him 5 or 6 times.

The last time we took two boats and used this guy in addition to John. He was great too.
