Basically looking for something for my office that multiple users can have a file open and updating data in real time and see the changes? Something that can be used on a tablet, doesnt matter if android, windows, or apple. Just need best options. Thanks

GOOGLE DOCS

My entire team uses it and the sharing/collaboration/security settings are insane.

Nothing comes close.

Oh, and its free.

i can answer just about any question you have. we've put it through its paces.

simple things like each user gets a different 'color' so you can see which cell in a spreadsheet they're paused on are very well done.

you can share; revoke privelidges, publish it (temporarily) as a webpage for read-only access to the web in general....its amazing.

<-- @ live .com

i will say our company "officially" supports salesforce and sharepoint only.

we're a bit of a rogue department in that we have to get stuff done and our sharepoint site is almost always down or having problems.

in other words, our company looks the other way and allows us to use this because we have alot of interaction with partners and collaboration is key.

google docs makes my job ridiculously easy (which is why i'm on here all the time )

let me tell u our scenerio real quick.
-mental health hospital
-25 male patients
-25 female patients

right now we have a spreadsheet with every patients name down the side, with 15min visual observations by each one for the techs to report on.
we want each tech on the unit to have a mobile device to do this in real time so the nurses at the station can monitor what is going on in real time, without receiving a piece of paper.

easy as pie.

you'll need a gmail account (or link their company email to the documents you want to share) for each tech unless you want them sharing one account.

i'm not sure about iphone/ipads, but android tablets and phones work extremely well with gdocs.

i see google has most of their tools available for iOS. Anyone using iOS and gdocs want to comment?

I especially like the 'chat' feature built into the spreadsheet..makes collaboration even nicer.

awesome! Would it work with the surface pro if not apple? We dont have the mobile devices now which is why i said it didnt matter. And as far as email accounts go, if i did it as one shared company email would there be any way to tell who was updating the document, or would i have to give each user a gmail account to track activity between techs updating the doc?

oh damn. not owning a surface pro i cant really answer that..does it run some version of windows or is it an entirely different OS? if windows then i imagine it would..we use gdocs with our PCs here.

you'd probably want to give each user their own email for lots of reason..accountability in particular. if you are the 'admin' you can pretty much undo anything your folks have done & revert back to older versions in case something went wrong.

yes the surface is microsoft, again we dont have those just looking at options. And yes i will be the admin, it seems like multiple emails will be best. Thanks for all the help. I have your email, after my meeting if i have more questions i may shoot you an email! Have a blessed day, and thanks again

Wow just found a plugin Google makes that allows native editing of Microsoft documents stored on gdrive!

You used to have to convert a docx to a Google doc but now you can edit them as Microsoft docs without changing them.

I use docs on my ipad and iphone occassionally. Probably don't use it to the level you do, but it works fine for the spreadsheet I use to keep track of equipment info in the field. Use to use it more, but my work cut access to it from our network. Pisses me off, it was a great tool.

I wrote software for this if it is oilfield related. Several players on the shelf are currently using it.

Off topic , that's not good to here. We just switched from a wiki type site to SharePoint because we were crashing it weekly with uploads.

Agree that google docs is awesome for this. Watch out for HIPPA implications, however.

Used to use google docs with a bunch of developers and project managers and it was a great way to collaborate. If you check it out, look into using the conditional formatting so that you can have cells turn colors based on events... ie BP NORMAL = GREEN, BP HIGH = YELLOW, BP REALLY HIGH = RED... that kind of stuff.

ETA: If you need something more customized, secure and real-time updated, and you have a budget of $5k or more, hit me up. That's what I do. Web-based reactive forms with instant data updates. Works on any platform with a browser. /salespitch off
