Boyhood. Man, what a beautiful film that was.

Congratulations Richard Linklater. You made your magnum opus. Forget Dazed and Confused. This is the film that will immediately come to mind when I look back at your legacy as a director.

Some may pass this film off as merely a 3 hour movie with a clever gimmick. I feel sorry for them. I never once felt the "gimmick" to be distracting as I was too wrapped up in the beautiful human story that unfolded before me. If anything, it elevated the story. It added a touch of realism that could not have been done using a traditional time frame. You see technology, culture, politics, and everything in between grow up along with the characters in real time with no anachronisms.

There were no big melodramatic moments. No one died. There was no antagonist or any real major conflict that plagued Mason throughout the film. He had a normal(ish) life just like anybody else. And that's what I love about Linklater's movies. They don't have any forced drama. They just feel so natural.

Life is a series of snapshots and the film captured that perfectly.

Loved it. Did a great job of building the tension, I was on the edge of my seat ready for shite to get crazy about 4 times and he always just released it. Amazing movie.

I was 100% entertained. I didn't know about the gimmick going into it, but I agree it was not distracting. Done well.

I've read several posts on here about how the "nothing happened" for 3 hours. I mean, I'm not one to judge. Everybody sees things differently. But, I have to say, I really do feel bad for the folks that didn't get a rush of nostalgia or were simply bored by it.

I didn't even want it to end. It could have lasted 6 hours and I'd still be watching it.

i haven't dived into this b.c it looks like its boring. I find linkletter movies to be a tad slow. So I am nervous.

love the concept though.

That depends on what you consider "boring." If you need tension or conflict to drive the protagonist punctuated by emotional moments and a clear plot, you'll be bored.

What's the gimmick? What is the movie about?

It was filmed over many years as the child actors grew up.

well I need something, doesn't have to be a really strong plot but I won't be entertained with people sitting around talking about nothing for 3 hours.

Yes, it's the same concept of the Up series except one is a documentary series and the other is just a film.

Oh ok. The film would work better for me then. The up series sounds like an interesting concept but I'm not watching that many hours of it where as three would be better.

I agree with that completely.

But I do find the movie to be overrated. Good, yes; but nothing special IMO.

I'm just thankful that somebody else got the movie. Time flies, and all we have are these iconic moments we look back on.

I was never bored. But I was never particularly moved either.
