Guys if I have a program that connects to a sequel database on an onsite server and I want to load the application onto a windows tablet, is there anyway to connect to the program when i'm away from the office without using remote desktop? I guess what i'm asking is can I set the path of the database and allow the device to connect directly to the database via a wifi connection without remote desktop?

SQL, not sequel.

Do you have an IT department? If so you need to ask them if you can access the database remotely. If not you need to look into a VPN solution that allows secure remote access to your internal network. I set up a Barracuda VPN appliance for similar purposes. I use it mostly to make remote desktop more secure, but I could also use it to remotely connect to my local network and use an app like you're talking about.

This may be a dumb question but when logging in to a network in a tablet through a vpn am I looking at the my tablet and all of its contents or am I going to see a mirror of my desktop similar to a Remote Desktop session.

If you are using remote desktop, you are running the software on the server and viewing that remotely on your tablet/computer.

With everything working properly at home you are running the software on your tablet, and that software is calling the database on the work server through the VPN. So you would only see your own tablet desktop.

If you normally run the software on the server that the db is on:
1. make sure your IT dept is ok with your plan
2. bring the tablet to work
3. connect it to the work network
4. install the software on the tablet
5. get the software talking to the db

Step 5 may or may not be possible. If you can get that to work, the next step is to go home and connect to the VPN and then try and run the software there.

A VPN just secures your connection. You can run Remote Desktop over the VPN, but those are 2 separate things. With the Barracuda I mentioned, I log into the network through a web browser, then I select what I want to do, be it securing your connection or launching remote desktop. If I just set up the secure connection, all of my internet traffic actually routes through my work network, so not only can I run reports as if I was a local machine on the Network, my internet traffic is secured, which can be useful if you're using Public Wifi and logging into sensitive information.

Contacting a consultant is probably for the best, but considering your needs and level of expertise, I'd recommend the Barracuda SSL VPN I mentioned earlier. LINK It was under $1000, relatively easy to set up, and their tech support was fairly helpful. Those 3 features are hard to find in what you're looking for since these products are most often used by larger companies. But I've been doing IT work for a while, if you don't feel up to the challenge, Barracuda could probably recommend some resellers or installers.

Well after all this the techs for the software i was intending to install have told me they do not support VPN and do not advise i go this route. They advise that because the VPN would be constantly transferring data to a SQL database that any drop in coverage it could corrupt the data. They have advised i go either remote or terminal server.

You will occasionally have disconnects, so if the app you're using requires a bullet proof connection then I can see why they'd advise against it.
