I'm thinking about starting 529's for my 4 kids.

Can I make the contribution now and count it for the 2014 tax year (much like you can for an IRA) ?

Other advice on 529's in Louisiana are also welcome.

I believe you can only if the account was created in the tax year you apply for the deduction. You get a tax deduction if your a LA resident up to $4800 per child. The number at OFSA is 1-800-259-5626. Contact them to be sure.

For most states, it is December 31.

Exceptions are: Georgia, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Oregon and South Carolina. For these states, you have until the tax filing deadline.

To get the deduction in LA, you have to use the START plan.
