Because I thought that was a poor ending as well. Love the movie, just not sure I get the ending.

Up front, I should tell you that in the book, Carla Jean gets the coin toss wrong and is killed. I like the film version better.

On the other hand, you're speaking specifically about the sheriff's final talk. The book and film are set in 1980. Therefore, the Sheriff is of the WWII generation and the other principals (the Mosses, Chigurh, and Wells are boomers, although Wells might be a silent generation) - the sheriff laments the way things used to be. The 3 men are all very similar in their approach to problems, generally very methodical - yet they are all pursuing different outcomes (with the same ultimate object, the money). The juxtaposition of the 3 main characters is completely clear - Moss is a hunter. Once he takes the money, he becomes the hunted and the sheriff is hunting both "hunters".

So - we have the anticlimax of 2 of the 3 protagonists killed off-screen - a potential for the killer to meet justice (but he avoids it).

Then you have the sheriff's summation. 2 dreams - both about his father - one in which his father gives him some money and the other where his father has gone on ahead of him and is preparing a campsite.

Throughout the film, the sheriff had been lamenting the loss of values - this final monologue was about the opportunities the previous generation had offered and the hope and uncertainty of the future. "And then I woke up." Life isn't a dream. The film's lack of a nice, neat, satisfying ending reinforces that.

The book and film are just so good that I hate to see them slammed without a response. I didn't even get into the whole Jungian thing or the Vietnam nexus. The Coens were PERFECT in their execution with the subdued soundtrack, the intensity of the chase, the communication of the key message within the limited canvas of a 2 hour feature film.

And the acting - as good as the Coens are at drawing out great performances, it is typically with their usual suspects (Goodman, Turturro, Polito). The more distance I get from it, this may be their finest film - and I've been watching since Raising Arizona.

I knew I'd wasted my time well before the ending.

Possible spoiler-

I think our best chance is to head off into a wilderness full of wolves and do stupid shite. "

It's my favorite for sure, followed closely by Miller's Crossing

No Country is a top 10, maybe top 5, movie for me

No Country for Old Men- after all the action and tension, you end it with a quote?

The ending is brilliant. Why? Because the whole movie is a commentary on our growing desensitization to violence. Many moviegoers were waiting for a shootout/bloodbath to end the movie. They got a monologue and felt duped. That says all you need to know about our love of violence.

I came in wondering if anybody would say this, and holy crap first reply. The movie was only like 90 minutes by the way.

It was an unsatisfying ending, sure, but that movie was pretty interesting. Very well done.

Remember Me. Granted, the movie pretty much sucked before one of the most insulting endings of all time, but if I had rotten vegetables in the theater, I would have thrown it at the screen over that ending.

Good choice. The protagonist for most of the movie dies offscreen and is largely forgotten. Just silly.

Recently, Birdman's ending was incongruous with and made a mockery of the previous two hours.

Matrix Revolutions. The ending to that one damn near ruined all three movies for me.

Can someone please explain how or why this ending makes any sense.

I'm a Nolan fan - seriously - but these movies, outside of one performance by one actor in one film - are just 1 big "meh".

Tom Hardy was incredible as Bane, you're right.
