I know I'm probably going to get bashed for this, but I just cant seem to root for her anymore. I mean, of course, in the first season, I felt bad for her and rooted for her all the way, but after her brother died, didn't it seem like she turned into a more subtle version of him? Quick to anger, strong sense of self-entitlement, gets bailed out of stupid decisions she makes etc.

A couple of points in this article explain exactly what I mean since I really can't write worth a shite.

quote:

One of the things that repulse me in the Mother of dragons is the self entitlement for ... Everything. Who died and made you Queen? The fact that you got sold like sheep to a warlord / rapist / butcher / slaver as his personnel sex toy doesn't give you any special privileges. Your old man was a nut that liked to burn and torture people alive; he got exactly what he deserved. With Aerys Targaryen death your claim to Westeros vanished.

quote:

Another thing regarding Daenerys, why doesn’t she ever train her dragons? They supposed to follow her commands just like that? All she does is lay around all day and dream about the past. She is still a small annoying and stupid child that has a massive rage attack issues. You could see it every time that something doesn't go her way or when someone tries telling her she is wrong.

quote:

With Daenerys it always feels like everything constantly goes her way. No matter what she does or to be exact what horrible mistakes she makes, she always comes on top. The problem is that she stays on top not because she does something special to recover from her mistakes but because everything turns around for her by itself. Daenerys does so many foolish moves that wouldn’t fly in Westeros. In a sense it feels like she deals with armatures in the free cities. Compare Daenerys Targaryen to other characters in A Song of Ice and Fire Series like: Rob Stark - loses his head for one honorable mistake. Jon Snow - got a similar fate like his half brother for going on his way without considering the opinions of others. The fact remains that his black brothers were not ready for the massive changes he planned to make. Tyrion Lannister - The Dwarf got his nose cut off because he didn’t expect the assassination attempt. Jaime Lannister - Got his hand chopped off for his arrogance. Theon Greyjoy - OMG I can't even think about his fate, it's too painful to describe it, although he was never one of my favorites.

I will warn you I have not read the books, so please forgive my ignorance of the differences between the show and the books.

You would be surprised. There are a lot of people in your court on this. If Dany was suddenly not completely hot, then I don't think she's an engaging character and is really just a stupid spoiled whore. If you take looks out of the equation for Arya, Sansa, and Cersei, they're still completely engaging and great characters.

Dany's pretty cool for like a sixteen year old chick.

She has become pretty unpopular among book readers right at about the point she is now in the show. I think she makes a lot of stupid, self righteous, self absorbed decisions.

You can't take looks out of the equation. The godlike, otherworldly beauty of the ancient Valyrians is central to the story. (I think.)

I feel like it bothers me more because Sansa seems to be progressing in savvy and maturity while Dany is regressing.

But a character should be more than her looks. Cersei for instance is largely defined by them, but she's a very strong character even discounting her looks. The only thing I can use to describe Dany is vane and up her own arse. Cersei is at least entertaining to read about. Dany, not so much.

Sansa had nowhere to go but up from her lemon cakes. Dany is finding her way while creating an empire.

She's definitely the worst chapters of the female characters. Check that, Catelyn maybe worst.

in the books she actually still is a child in her teens. I hate her story because it has made little impact on the main plot in westeros. Shes just messing with society across the sea. She's always whining that the Iron throne should be hers and she has had multiple opportunities to get back to Westeros instead shes just getting engrossed in a free the slaves campaign.

Cersei has also been playing the game a lot longer than Dany has. Dany has gotten pigheaded through her early successes because she does not have the maturity (at least not yet) to take success in stride. She doesn't have what it takes to rule yet.

Or not.

But she still has a more demanding day than Sansa.

Yea I don't mind her. Her story line definitely downgraded by book 3. It seems like the majority dislike her now though.

I loved the end of book 5 with Theons story. One of my favorite characters these days.

Arya being the best by far. She has possibly grown to be one of my favorite, if not my favorite fictional characters of all time. Sam from Lotr and huck fin probably round out my top 3.

I'm getting off track but I need to think about my rankings some more now.

I have never been so miserable as I have been while reading book 4 and 5 cersei chapters. I think what makes me hate her the most is how smart she thinks she is. When she's actually a complete idiot. Somehow she thinks she would have been an excellent king. She hates literally everybod. Zero redeeming qualities. The mountain has more redeeming qualities than cersei and he's got negative 20.

I'm with you there. I had to take breaks when I was reading her chapters when I normally would have been in a reading mood because she annoyed me so much. I guess she's a good character, but damn do I hate her so much. I would be mumbling "shut up" under my breath because I find her personality so abrasive.

I really find a character who is really so out of it to be refreshing in these books. A lot of people hate Sansa chapters, especially early on, but I find them to be great so that we can go inside the mind of a person who doesn't get what's really going on but slowly but surely gets what's going on around her.

Cersei is the inverse, in that she gets more and more insane, and just listening to what she thinks in her head is a treat for me.

But with Cersei, we at least get other POV on her to where we understand that she's completely nuts. We don't get that from Dany, to where she just comes across as self absorbed to the audience and nothing else.
