I usually tell them the first 2 seasons were better.

Anyone else dislike the show and have had people try to say you must just not get the "sophisticated" jokes?

Community often gets praise for obscure pop culture and movie references. BBT does the same thing only instead of pop culture you have jokes about Shroedinger's cat, Siri and comic book characters. That's why people say it's "sophisticated", it will make jokes using non-mainstream references. Not trying to turn this into the usual Community vs. BBT thread, just trying to show why some people think it's sophisticated.

The jokes in those subjects are still fairly mainstream though. They use comic characters like the flash instead of someone obscure. It's tailored made for mainstream consumption.

I don't get this whole "you must not be smart enough" thing. For one I've never heard any person who watches the show say something like that. Second, none of the jokes are "smart people jokes". At all. It's simply a sitcom with corny one liners that just happens to have a background of science

Yup. It would have to be though. The writers/creators want to make money and attract as large of an audience as possible. Any somewhat obscure references like the Schrodinger's Cat thing are explained explicitly for the general audience to understand to some extent or another.

It's just another commercialized, meh network sitcom. Take it for what it is. I don't think it's quality television, but it's ok to have on in the background.

That goes back to my first comment about the show was funnier in the first 2 seasons. Instead of a geek version of Friends the dynamic was 4 geeks and the hot neighbor girl, and they used Penny to show how different geeks were from normal people. Sheldon wears a white and black striped costume to Penny's Halloween party full of Penny's people, they ask if he's a Zebra. No, he's the Doppler Effect. One episode they bought a replica of the Time Machine and Sheldon has a nightmare about morlocks. Yes it's a popular scifi book that they made a movie about, but it's still a scifi book and the movie wasn't really successful. I doubt my wife has a clue what a morlock is. They definitely dumbed it down and aimed lower as the show became more successful.

It was still fairly highly known material even then. It's a Chuck Lorre show, you guys give it too much credit.

Want to know how awful the writing is on this show. Watch it without the laugh tracks. It's beyond obviously bad to me with them but without its exponentially worse. LINK

It's a terrible, condescending show. It's even worse considering that some of the cast members are legitimately talented, i.e., Halberg and Parsons.

I've probably seen 30 minutes of the show total, and while the so-called humor is puerile, and not in a good way, the laugh track howls at Every Single Sentence like Beavis & Butthead after hearing someone use "wood" in a sentence. It is a powerfully annoying show to listen to.

Not once. In fact, everyone I know who watches it has a college degree in the house. But I do see a shitload of threads bashing it. I guess it's the cool thing to do.

I'd call Frasier a "sophisticated" sitcom. But not really BBT.

Last nights episode was fantastic.

I have never missed an episode since the pilot aired, and no, never use the "smart enough to get the jokes" or hear anyone else say that.

I enjoyed the show for a season or 2, then it just got too repetative. It is basically the same episode every week, or at least was when I quit watching.

The whole idea of BBT fans accusing non-fans of not being smart enough to get the jokes really comes from the non fans. They just assume that's how fans think. They think that's how we justify liking the show. The only fans I've seen say this were just responding to the constant bashing.

I'm so tired of the BBT without the laught track video. First of all, it's a studio audience. Secondly, that video has dialogue cut out where there is overlap. The laugh breaks are built in. Of course, it sounds bad when removed.

You just don't appreciate the humor.

And for this, Shelly says,

Who doesn't like soft kitty?

Seinfield sucks. I think of Seinfield the same way the OP does BBT.

BBT is hilarious.
