He did seem more negative than usual for basketball.

This basketball team is very frustrating. Many see how good they can be, and for flashes they show on the court how good they can be. Sometimes out there they look like a top 15 type club. However, other times they look poor on defense, turnover the ball over too much, and do silly things to keep inferior teams in the ball game. Hawthorne has a front row seat to every game they play. He wants to see them win and he wants to see the succeed.

My problem with Hawthorne as it relates to baseball is his lack of knowledge of the game. Then when the color commentator tries to explain why something is happening Jim tries to argue with them. He's been broadcasting LSU baseball games for 30 years now. He should have learned a few things.

Is there an obvious heir apparent for when he hangs it up?

I don't think there's an obvious one, no.

He's very bad actor . He's a tired old codger these days. On the way home Ford and Blanton were talking about the obvious biggest shot of the game, the three by Gray. They played the call by Jim and it was hilariously lame, total shock and almost contempt that it went in.. I wish her would hang it up.

I'm not a fan of Charlie in general, but I'd rather him calling games just because I actually get to know what's happening.

He is just a very passionate fan and the Martin 3 was a surprise he made it. He shoots threes all the time and they hardly ever go in. Also he is just mad like the rest of us that we are making it so hard on ourselves to win basketball games. Teams like USC we should be able to dominate

Yeah no. Martin has been shooting 3's at a pretty decent clip since his 1-19 start. And that was like 10 games ago.

Hawthorne just has a negative attitude all around. He's probably been doing his job too long and is burnt out on it. He needs to hang his mic up.

Just like the rest of us, Jim is a huge LSU fan. We would probably sound negative also when the other team makes a big play or the way LSU is playing if we were calling the game. It is his and our way of coping with disappointment and stress during the game.

Want proof? Read the in game thread. It is a roller coaster of comments from LSU is a shite team when things are not going well to LSU is GOAT when they pull out the win.

Jim just can't keep his emotions in check during the game and I don't blame him.

So your defense of him is to compare him to in-game thread posters?

That's really weak.

I do. It's his job (he doesnt have to be void of emotion but his only emotion these days is negativity). You comparing him to comments in an in-game thread is chuckle worthy.

He almost sounds happy it happened like he knew it was going to and people should have listened to him.

The most common "fill-in" when Jim can't do a baseball or basketball game has been Patrick Wright the last few years. That would be a logical in-house choice.

I hate the homer announcers (their team can do no wrong), but the doom and gloom is a bit much.

Also, I had no TV for the '91 CWS. He's all I remember of that. And his call of Todd Walker's granny is up there with my all-time favorites.

So it's OK that the guy LSU pays to objectively paint a picture of the events of a game has emotional swings and perpetual negativity akin to an in-game thread?

I actually know what call you are talking about…that was awesome. I can't speak for the guy, but maybe after 30+ years of doing 3 sports, it can all wear and tear your body and make you a little less enthusiastic….

Charlie is very knowledgeable of baseball, and LSU baseball specifically. His biggest drawback is his monotone voice. However I have noticed that he is trying to bring more excitement to his broadcasts.

With Hawthorne, I can forgive the live ball mistakes because over the course of an exciting game I can understand one or two slip of the tongues. It's the dead ball commentary that irks me with his baseball calls.

That said, you have to laugh at, "there's a swing and a miss for a called strike three."

I like him as well…but I am a little partial because I am one of the few posters here who also religiously follows women's basketball/softball, so I hear him more than most people do.

It will be like every other person….when you bring up a name, some will like that person and others will be quick to jump in and pile on the same person. No new hire for this job will totally be met with open arms when it actually happens.
