Sam smith has given royalties to petty for "stay with me" because it's similar to "I wount back down".

It's basically the same chord progression, but that's pretty crappy that they had to pay royalties, considering how basic the chord progression is.

I hope Westerberg sticks out his hand to that rabbit toothed Gatorfan for some "Rebel Without a Clue" coinage.

Neither can I. Shocked that Petty and Lynne are getting royalties.

I remember Petty said that Dani California was a ripoff of Mary Jane's Last Dance in 2006. I could at least recognize the similarities in that

I wont back down is a super simple basic chord progression most adequate musicians can play. frick Tom Petty for this. And for his allegations toward Dani California.

It's music you dumbfrick. He didnt copy or cover your song uncredited and sell it. He wrote a song that has the same basic chord progressions. Its not like Petty is a guitar god who has his groundbreaking original sounds being ripped off.

I'd love to copyright and sell CDG chord progression then sue every single country music artist.

It's more than the chord progression

it's def more than chord progression.

its syllable accents and very similar rhyme scheme over the same chord progression.

Tom Petty spoke out about it today on his website.

quote:

"About the Sam Smith thing. Let me say I have never had any hard feelings toward Sam. All my years of songwriting have shown me these things can happen. Most times you catch it before it gets out the studio door but in this case it got by. Sam's people were very understanding of our predicament and we easily came to an agreement. The word lawsuit was never even said and was never my intention. And no more was to be said about it. How it got out to the press is beyond Sam or myself. Sam did the right thing and I have thought no more about this. A musical accident no more no less. In these times we live in this is hardly news. I wish Sam all the best for his ongoing career. Peace and love to all.

-Tom Petty"

Ummm, according to this Rolling Stone article he didn't care about the Danny California thing.

quote:

RS: Have you heard the Red Hot Chili Peppers song "Dani California" yet, because obviously it sounds a lot like "Mary Jane's Last Dance"?

Petty: Yes, I have. Everyone everywhere is stopping me. The truth is, I seriously doubt that there is any negative intent there. And a lot of rock & roll songs sound alike. Ask Chuck Berry. The Strokes took "American Girl"[for their song "Last Nite"], and I saw an interview with them where they actually admitted it. That made me laugh out loud. I was like, "OK, good for you." It doesn't bother me.

RS: There have been news reports that you were going to sue the Chili Peppers.

Petty: If someone took my song note for note and stole it maliciously, then maybe. But I don't believe in lawsuits much. I think there are enough frivolous lawsuits in this country without people fighting over pop songs.

And it's way more than just the chord progression the song copied, it's the entire melody. You can't just take a song, slow it down and add your own words to it without crediting the original artist.

ETA: Video showing the melody

Love that last youtube - all you do is change the tempo and the key, and they sound exactly alike!

I think the real "copying" here is not the notes themselves but, as someone else noted, the accents. Singing 3-2-root isn't exactly an earth shattering melody, but STAY WITH ME, won't you, STAY WITH ME" tracks the way Petty sings won't back down too closely.

Anyway I once read an interview with Roger McGuinn (who came off as a complete a-hole btw) who accused Petty of ripping off the Byrds with American Girl. I think of that every time one of these __ is ripping off Petty stories comes out. I think Petty's music is so basic and so fundamental that it inevitably reminds you vaguely of something else you've already heard. Hell that's part of Petty's appeal. But it works both ways.
