The weapon you use doesn't really matter, except that rifle is a HORRIBLE tank weapon.

Some weapons are better for some Roles than others because of the innate bonuses and Weapon Mastery. When deciding on a Weapon, the things to take into consideration are (in no particular order):

- Your own playstyle: so which weapons are most comfortable to play with, whether you like being melee or ranged, etc. (this should also factor in choosing which Role you want to focus on - Healer/Tank/Controller/DPS)

- Each weapons' attacks, combos, effects (like stuns, Knockbacks, etc), limitations, and RPS mechanics (interrupt / block break)

- Good combos to use for power regen (Handblasters' Pulse Beam, 2-Handed's Doom Spin, etc.)

- The innates that are first available in each tree (the ones from the actual weapon moves, not the stand-along bonuses)

Here's an old guide that lists the innates from just the weapon trees (except Shield)

I'm not a big believer in using WM as a Tank because of the very real possibility to get caught mid-animation, hard-stunned and thus cause the raid to wipe. Other than Tanks, all other Roles (DPS, Healer & Troller) should be factoring Weapon Mastery into their decision.

In update 38, they removed the tank damage penalty.

Agreed but a Tank that is doing WM is a Tank that isn't positioning mobs, gaining/keeping aggro, paying attention to Cleanses, using combat mechanics, etc. Not only that but the Tank damage from melee is irrelevant compared to the DPS'rs. It also wastes valuable SP that could be buffing Dom or Health.

If you're not running challenging content, sure. Have at it. But in content you and your raid find difficult the small damage out isn't worth the risk.

Besides, a Tank that's worried about how much DPS they are doing isn't Tanking correctly because they shouldn't have that much time on their hands (unless they are Ice). The stat a Tank should be looking at at the end of the raid is his Damage In and comparing it to that of the rest of the raid. Your Damage In should be multiples of anyone else.

Here's our Love & War raid from 2 weeks ago...

My Power In (Magnificent) was pretty much dead center in the group's average, which is reeeeally good for a Fire Tank. My Damage In though is not just beyond what anyone else had, but it's higher than everyone else combined. That's the number a Tank needs to focus on.

My Damage Out was about where it needed to be (we ran with 1 troller and 2 healers, Princess Prism likes to play Healer Tank sometimes ;) ).

With AF2, if it turns out that bosses are attracted to WM'rs, I might respec into it to help keep aggro but aside from that I don't see the reward as being greater than the risk.

Typically in current tier content, my damage output is dead last and mostly comes from orbital strikes, henchmen, and reflective shield damage. WM is for PVP and grinding solo content as a tank.

I usually do solo content as DPS. It's tougher at first (and I usually end up needing to do boss mobs as a Tank until I get a few gear upgrades), but it goes faster.

I'm a big fan of the WM long range attacks from DW to Bow and blaster to Bow.

I use Staff, and the Mortar Mastery is simply ridiculous. In PVP it's the freaking be-all/end-all. I can foresee them nerfing the damage it does in PVP.

In Legends play, I typically use Joker.

I'm usually playing Robin. I was using Nightwing for a good bit at one point, but then they messed with his ranged and it screwed up my combat mechanic timing.

Ran LoA Legends last night with Batman, it looks like they fixed the final fight so that Ra's takes longer to come down and doesn't Reflect nearly as often.
