The scheme involves criminals tampering with ATM machines to capture debit card and personal identification numbers, which are then used to create duplicate cards, Maxwell said. It's possible the duplicate cards might be used at stores, he said, but the activity seems focused on ATM cash withdrawals.

The scheme affects institutions in "certain states" along the Interstate-10 corridor, according to statement from Whitney Bank. A New Orleans-based FBI spokesman, Kyle Hanrahan, said he could not confirm that claim and declined further comment.

Maxwell said Whitney ATMs and customers impacted by the scheme are all within Louisiana, concentrated in the New Orleans and Baton Rouge areas. The bank detected fraudulent attempts to withdraw cash elsewhere, he said.

They got $500 out of my account from an ATM in Mobile Saturday. Whitney disabled my card (without letting me know) and I've filed a dispute.

Yeah. Whitney had to pull the trigger on disabling cards pretty quickly over the weekend. If your card isn't working, go to your local Whitney. They may be able to re-open your card if they can verify that recent transactions on your account are legitimate.

Note: this wasn't breach of Whitney's systems. Skimming devices were placed on ATMs. This has been happening all over the gulf south. When you go to an ATM, it may not be a bad idea to tug on the card reader to make sure it isn't a fake.

I very rarely use ATMs, but I used them twice last week (one at a Whitney location in Hammond and the other at the convention center in NOLA). I'm definitely going to be more vigilant now.

Ya they did this at a local grocery store in AZ so ANYONE that had used their cards at the store got them turned off. It was a huge pain.

I've been doing this for a couple years now ever since I heard of this kind of fraud on a "20/20 Investigates" show a couple years ago.

Also, Whitney has been upgrading their ATM's all across the area in the last year. I pulled up to the usual ATM I use near my house a couple months back and the whole card reader/keypad was different. I went inside to ensure that it was indeed a new machine and not a "skimmer" and they told me it was recently changed.

Sounds like Whitney did a pretty good job here of limiting it

Yeah. This was all done in an abundance of caution. Better to shut the card down temporarily than have fraudulent charges.

Hubby got hit in Mexico. They use the false card readers and have their own camera to see you type in your PIN. It would be a good idea to cover up your hands when you type your PIN number in.
