Freshman year for me. First real LSU basketball moment that demonstrated we were arriving as a basketball power in Daddy Dale era. We won't that game in OT with all 5 starters fouling out. Almost like a miracle. A real shame we did not get invited even to the NIT.

A full house at LSU for the game would be awesome to see

It was truly an incredible atmosphere that night. I believe that may have been Mike's first rappel from the ceiling. Combined that with Sid Crocker's introduction of the starters including the best sixth man in all of college basketball Willie "The Black Jet" Sims the crowd in a frenzy.

The students who could not get seats in the student section were stacked about 3 to 4 rows around the upper concourse. Many had been camping out since earlier in the week.It was our time and our house.

I was there. It was an unforgettable game. We had bench guys shutting down the #1 team in America as all our starters fouled out. Got home, could not sleep, so waited for the Advocate to read about it. Greatest LSU basketball game I have ever seen.

That was the first big step in the Fantastic Climb to the Top.

You all seem to forget LSU housed Coach Cali and his Wildcats last January in the P-Mac.

They weren't No. 1 though and in fact were a No. 9 seed in the Tourney and had 9 regular season losses.

This year is much more analogous to that '78 game.

We had done very little of note in the 5 years previous and did not even make the NIT that year but it showed we could compete.

That's because there were only about 48 Teams combined between the NCAA and NIT in those days. That team went 18-9 and 12-6 in the conference as I recall. With extra games against pay for play teams and the SEC tourney, that team computes out to about a 22-23 win team that definitely makes post season today. That was one of the greatest nights ever in Pete's Palace.

Good point. The SEC tourney was not implemented until the following year. Just in time to take away what would have been our automatic bid as regular season champs.

The loss in the SEC tournament dropped them to an at large bid. Under the rules from the previous year they may have gotten a higher seed and not have had to play Michigan State and the Magic Man in the regionals.
