It is your tree or shrub so do what you want to, but to say that is not bad for the tree is just wrong, Google crepe murder or even crepe myrtle pruning and all articles discourage the technique

we're talking about an overgrown shrub here, doesn't make a rat's arse difference if they're pruned back or not

it's fun, exercise, and I like things neat and orderly, oddly, the landscaping company hired by the HOA trims the ones in the median but doesn't trim the ones along the fence line, and again, you can't tell any difference except that in the winter the trimmed ones look nicer than the scraggly, unkempt, untrimmed ones

I can tell you which trees were murdered and which ones weren't.
It is extremely easy, you must just not know what to look for.

Maybe we have saved the tree's of some lurker.
I just don't think people realize how shitty it really looks.

I only cut the branches growing towards the inside of the tree. I never cut down to knots like most people do

don't cut them. you ruin the structure of the treee. cutting them down to the stumps like everyone does in the late winter is stupid. the trees end up forming knots and look like shite.
And this. I only trim branches growing near the bottom and branches growing in. Never chop horizontally

If they grow back green and look tighter and more organized after you prune them, then what is the major drawback other than how bare it looks until it grows back?
Just overall not good for the tree?

Other than not being how a crepe myrtle should look, going from 1 branch to 100 at a single point, and having to spend a couple months with ridiculous looking trees in your front yard? Nothing I guess.

The pruning I do is not bad for the tree. Mine is at the front of my house so I just keep it from looking bushy. Trim bottom so there's not a ton of mini stumps and then the interior and low hanging limbs. Leaves it looking neat and like a tree.

Yeah, I don't have the balls to cut down to a single stump but what about cutting it at around 6 to 8 ft high where there's 4 to 10 major branches? It would still be below where the leaves start so it'll be bare - but not a stump.

I hate everything about crepe myrtles. Once you plant one you are committed for life. I can't get rid of those bastards.

and let me guess, when you reach that rung on your step ladder that cautions you against going higher, that's where you stop?

I like to climb as I prune. Makes me feel as one with the tree

BUMP
The Crepe Murdering season is commencing.
People....please stop chopping off the tops.
It looks like shite and hurts the tree.
