I want to see him try to entertain a 3 year old on a several hour car ride by asking them to "point out the first cow you see" while he is driving and the 3 year old is buckled up in the carseat in the back.

I let my 14 year old son have my Iphone when he started 9th grade this year since I am just not a phone person. He uses it more than I would. I only use it for company trips and such to check emails. If people need to contact me that badly they can either drive over or call my wife. Our 5 year old grand daughter used my wife's samsung S whatever constantly to play games until we bought her a nice tablet for christmas this year; one of the best and most used gifts we have ever given.

I've got 2 kids aged 4 and 6. The only time we've used a tablet for them is on overseas flights. They've managed fine on 4-6 hour drives without one.

I've got three, youngest is 17, unfortunately I have to temper what I think is good preparation for learning to be an adult with the completely undisciplined, unstructured lifestyle that they experience when they're with their mother, lots of unlearning and reteaching

we've done many long drives with young kids buckled in the back seat without tablets or phones. I dont see the big deal.

I do understand the point you are trying to make in that some parents do use tablets, etc in place of actual parenting. (at least I'm assuming that is the point you are trying to make)

There are lots of luxury items we can do without. But if we don't have to, why should we?

I mean people got along fine in the 50's with black and white tvs with knobs to turn the channel. Why do we have color tvs with remotes and more than three channels? Spoiled and ruining every generation since the 50's

Kindles etc don't bother me when it comes to young kids. The math flash game was great for us. Also spelling apps etc. People have TVS in their homes and DVD players in the car. In moderation they are great. Kids learn technology which is important.

It's the social media, cell phone thing that worries me.

I think they are totally different animals.

I honestly don't know, the ex has flaunted custody/visitation rules for so long that I don't know exactly when he got it, the judge ordered the ex to get him and his brother cell phones and e-mail accounts to maintain contact with me about 9 years ago, and could not be taken away for disciplinary purposes, of course that didn't happen as ordered

Exactly .. At one time .. people sat on the living room floor and listened to Fibber McGee & Molly crackling on an old wooden radio .. and loved it .. But why do that now if you have more at your fingertips ?

Whenever you stop being their main sources of transportation and entertainment

Little kids with cell phones is so pointless. They aren't going anywhere without you more than likely...why the cell phone
