If you can deal with the service, the food at Italian Bowl is pretty good.

Not necessarily a new restaurant, however it is not frequently talked about for restaurants in AP.

Italian Bowl was a frequent stop for us before we moved. We even ordered for pick up on numerous occasions. We really liked it.

We go back for the food, but the service is below par and marginal at best.

The owner does a good job of maintaining a standard in the back, but unfortunately there is no standard up front. Long wait times, infrequent service, forgotten orders, no pre-bussing and a waitress using profanity at our table while accusing cheerleaders volunteering of taking her tip money are just some of the issues we have experienced.

Saritas on the Diversion, moved from the river to hwy 22. Food is as good. I prefer their fajitas to anything else out there. They just started offering breakfast on the weekends. We just left and I had a breakfast Burrito that was excellent. Well worth a visit if you have not been.

Theres a fairly new mexi joint on 44 in Gonzales called Mi cochina (i think) that I've heard good things about.

There's a new chicken and waffle place on 42, but they have terrible yelp reviews.

New to me is a bakery/home cookin restaurant on 44 called crossroads. Just tried it and loved it.

One of those places you have to go at least once. Didn't think it was terrible, but that area demographic is probabaly more geared to a Cane's than chicken and waffle dive.

Mexican on hwy44 MI Cocina... It's really good! I've eaten there 3 times in the last month.. Tell them what you like and they will recommend something on their menu! I got the number 30 today.. Was really good.. The cowboy bean soup was good that came with it.

The 3 times we have been there we have had the same server.. Kind of short Mexican guy that calls you amigo when he comes up to your table, every time. Real nice guy. Checks on you frequently. Gets our kids attention while walking by.

We normally eat at el paso in Gonzales but it had kind of gone downhill that is why we tried here.

Today I had something pretty good. It was steak cubed with onions sautéed in the pan kind of like fajitas with mozzarella cheese melted on top.. It came with a different salsa that was different than the normal you get at first.. Came with all the fixings and came with a side of cowboy soup.. Was like a chili type soup with beans and some type of sausage.. It was pretty good also.

Other times I have gotten the fajitas that were good but they didn't put enough tomatoes in with the steak onions and bell peppers.. I like my tomatoes! And I also got the beef taco salad! It was really good as well. My wife got a tortilla soup.. This is the second time she got this.. It was 5.50 with shredded chicken added to the soup.. It was a big bowl for lunch! She couldn't eat it all.

I have been to Mi Cocina several times. It's solid Mexican and I recommend trying it to anyone that hasn't been.

It's similar to El Meskal except that it is cleaner and the food isn't as cheap. Still reasonable prices though.

I really like their shredded pork tamale. Their rice is about the only thing I have had that I am not crazy about everything else that I have tried has been good.

Italian Bowl

Wife and I have been fans of their food for quite a while now.
Went last night and it's evident that the lack of customers is hurting the quality now. Chicken parmesan (basic and very easy dish) was horrible. Chicken had the texture of a tire and tasted worse. Fried eggplant special tasted like the eggplant was fried and left in the oven on warm since the day before. Kids pizza was so greasy it was inedible. Marino bread was still good as was the sensation salad.
Hate to see this at a joint we really enjoyed the last couple years but with the location and lack of visibility from Airline, I guess it was only a matter of time.

That stretch of Airline is murder on restaurants for some reason. Only a handful have experienced success in that 1-2mile stretch.

Half Shell, Mi Padres, Albasha, Las Palmas, Rotolo's and maybe one or two more.

Maybe it is more demographics of the area that will not support it than the actual restaurants. The restaurants that make it seem to be cheap food that cater to families that are looking just to fill kids for cheap.

Yeah the wife loves the italian bowl and the chicken parm. However we have been going much less frequently because of the service- which is honestly sad.
