Anyone ever been? Looking at taking a trip in March with the wife. From what I've read it looks like a nice place, but as one should I beseech the OT to share any experience that you might have had there.

Never been. Heard they have beautiful beaches there and you can travel cheaply there.
Downside I've heard is that outside of the resorts isn't the safest place. But not sure if it's like the same people that say Cancun and other resort areas in Mexico is super dangerous if you leave the resort.

Honeymooned here as well, we had a good time.
We left the resort once or twice in about a 5 day span and only to go to excursions. Not a great place to go out on the town from what I've heard. Could be dangerous.
Weather was great all 5 days, even when they had 40-50% ran chance.

I saw some recommendations for Excellence, and may stay there. It looks incredibly nice. For those of you who went did you mostly stay around the resort or did you get out in the city? Go horseback riding, snorkling, ziplining etc? We will go the resort route for sure, but want to get a feel for the area as a whole as well. Appreciate the feedback so far.

There are a lot of travel guides to PC,DR and I would read them all.
We did go off the resort on Excursions. We did one to the Basilica in Higuey which was pretty cool, we did horse back riding and all that stuff.
I would not go off on your own at all. Trust me.
The airport is nice for the Caribbean but it is a CLUSTERfrick.
There will be guys there just taking your luggage and expecting a tip. Take care of your own shite. Do not leave it unattended. Do not let them hustle you.

And drink Mamajuana whereever you go. The range of different ways they prepare it is interesting.

Wife and I did Excellence in 2012.
Make sure you book a bus ride to the resort. Cab ride was about $140 round trip (1 hour each way).

Punta Cana Excellence is nice but the airport is about 45 minutes from the resort & the ride is not fun. Trust nobody at the airport & make sure you have your shuttles already set up for you before hand on your way to & front the resort.

It's a shithole outside of the resorts. If resorts are your thing, then go for it. Great beaches. Went about 10 years back. Won't go back again though as there isn't much opportunity for exploration outside the resort unless you're with a local.

And as others have said, don't plan to do anything except pretty planned excursions outside of the resort. Super shitty

May go there for my honeymoon. I've checked out a ton of places. I've heard good things about Iberostar Grand Bavaro.
I know someone who stayed at Excellence and they said it was decent.
And for all those saying DR is shitty and nothing to do outside of the hotels/resorts, you do realize that's why it was built, right?
Most places like Punta Cana were created as a tourist designation for people to hit up the resorts, drink a shite ton and eat.
I never understood the point of paying for a big resort to only want to go on trips to other parts of the island, etc. If that's the case go to a nice island that has less people and is safer
