cleaning wood rifle stocks

Just brought home a couple of rifles from my Mom's house. She and my Dad are/were smokers. Any advice on the best way to clean up these rifle stocks would be appreciated.

Murphy Oil soap

What kind of finish is on the stocks?

Not sure. They are both 40-plus years old. Maybe some kind of old, clear finish, but if so, not much left. Maybe just an oil finish?

Take a pic, it could be an old oil finish or it could have a varnish on top. What it is would dictate how to clean/ refinish it...

Sorry, I have no idea how to post pics on here.

We are nice people but you haven't given us jack to go on. Use the Murphy's. If it doesn't work, come back.

Did they use the rifles as ashtrays? What kind of funk are we talking about being on them here?

Had this same problem a few years back.
Murphy's oil soap. If that doesn't cut it, then Simple Green.
If that doesn't cut it, then sandblasting

He can go down to the bare wood with acetone and then refinish if need be...

They may be worth a lot. Wouldn't refinishing them diminish the value, if so?

220 grit until you're happy. Then a couple rubbings of tung oil. You'll be pleased with the results.

Very true, that is why pics were asked for for proper guidance...

Once you get them cleaned up, you may want to consider coating them with linseed oil. It's great for protecting wood stocks.

almost 8000 posts and you don't know how to post a picture?
take a picture with your phone, upload it to a photo hosting app such as photobucket, use the direct link provided after uploading. when posting a reply click on the "img" button to the right and then paste that direct link into the text box, click "ok". click preview to make sure it works, if it doesn't figure out what you screwed up, if it does click "submit"
