Hey guys, trying to dodge the boss and ask y'all a quick question. I have a '10 F150 that lately has had an issue with a minor shudder/vibration when turning, driving in lower gears, and even reverse.

Dropped it off at ford and the guy is saying it is my rear differential and that he needs to add a friction modifier and or something with the clutch. Says it's going to be $1k.

1) this is probably an issue I have to get settled now right?

2) is that a fair price?

$1000 to change the oil in the rear differential? That's the most absurd thing I've ever heard.

Tires have been balanced recently. This is an issue I've had for a little while now. It's nothing bad but enough to worry about. And I'm being honest, I have no idea about anything car related.

and or something with the clutch.

Those and or something parts are expensive and difficult to replace

Get a bucket.
Unscrew the diff drain plug.
Unscrew the diff fill plug and drain fluid into bucket.
Replace drain plug.
Get some 80W diff fluid
Insert it into fill hole.
Replace fill plug.

If drain plug (magnetic) has a bunch of crap on it, then you may have a gear problem. run with new fluid and see how it goes. 20 minutes and $40

you sure it's not your tires rubbing against the wheel well when turning?

1) if it is the rear end, I would

2) absolutely not.

We have a 2010 F150 work truck with the same issues your are stating plus a audible clunk when starting and stopping. It has over 220K miles and has never been a problem, but I am neurotic about my personal vehicle and I would get it looked at, but I would try to get another opinion because $1,000 seems pretty steep.

Thanks man. $1k is frickin outrageous

And to the poster above my response, it's not rubbing. I had tires that rubbed but now I downsized and it's not that. It's definitely from the rear axel

If you live in Georgia, where about do you live I might be able to steer you to some decent places.

Those oversize tires may have slightly twisted your inner axle. Did you offroad?

DGD, go to another place. Unless yours is a limited slip, you don't need a friction modifier. However, that stuff is really easy to change - as easy, or easier in some cases, as doing an oil change. Never heard of a differential doing that. But if you want to change that fluid, find out what kind you have and change the fluid yourself for roughly $20 - $30 and probably 15 mins of your time. That way,

"Special Advisory"

SOME 2009-2010 F-150 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 6R80 TRANSMISSION MAY EXHIBIT A SHUDDER WHICH IS FELT DURING LOW SPEED LIGHT THROTTLE ACCELERATION BETWEEN 30-35 MPH (48-56 KM/H), THE SHUDDER/VIBRATION EVENT OCCURS TYPICALLY WHEN THE VECHICLE DOWNSHIFTS AND THEN IS FOLLOWED BY A LIGHT THROTTLE TIP-IN. See TSB for complete details Effective date 4/01/2010

Some 2010 F-150 vehicles equipped with a 4.6L engine, 6R80 transmission and built between 6/1/2009 and 12/1/2009 may exhibit a shudder which is felt during low speed, light throttle acceleration between 25-45 MPH (40-72 Km/h). The shudder/vibration event typically occurs when the vehicle downshifts and is followed by a light throttle tip-in. A new calibration is available to address the concern.

That sounds like a possibility. Does the vibration only occur at certain speeds? Does it occur when turning in both directions? Could also be driveline problems.

From a dealer on any service the answer is no. Find an "honest" mechanic (yeah I know an oxymoron) but find the "least crooked" mechanic and have them check it out.

Mine is the 5.4L. That all sounds about right. Low speeds, happens on turns and in reverse.

Nah, I don't off-road. I'm just THAT guy.

I don't live in GA sadly. I'm in Nashville.

I think y'all have convinced me to try and get a second opinion

Had a chance to relisten to the message during my break

He said that it's limited slip clutches in my rear differential. Said that they used to be able to use add friction modifiers but with my model they recommend replacing clutches. With parts and Labor it's $1,003
